The
Experience

Screened by trees, with the lake in front and mountains rearing beyond, this house is in a silent green world. Unexpectedly modern – dramatic sloping roofs, large windows – inside all is light and uncluttered. A large living area is coolly furnished with leather sofas on tiled floors; glass-encased stove for chillier days. Bedrooms are stylishly simple with polished wood floors, white walls and balconies. Anglo-Russian couple, Stanley and Vera – early rat-race retirees – love sharing their peaceful spot: go cycling, swimming, or take the lakeside path to Annecy. Return to drinks on the terrace, and the sound of birdsong.

Reviews

The only problem when trying to describe Vera and Stanley, our hosts at Les Racines, is choosing the word order; are they charming, welcoming, helpful and friendly or, perhaps, helpful, charming, friendly and welcoming? Whichever the order, their house is wonderful, the room and bathroom are spacious and well equipped, the views of the lake are splendid and the lake itself is a joy to swim in on a summer afternoon. And the breakfast in the garden on a sunny morning is a treat!

This is a fantastic place to stay and I would highly recommend it. The owners, Vera and Stanley, were so welcoming to us and could not have done more to make our stay comfortable. The house is wonderful with a great location. Best place to stay in Annecy in my view. Can't wait to visit again!

Roisin, Belfast

Five star luxury all round, I can't recommend Les Racines highly enough, everything was perfect. The house has been newly renovated to a very high standard. The photos hardly do it justice. Our bed was extremely comfortable, and the room very spacious with a superb modern bathroom. Everything was exceptionally clean and professionally presented. The owners could not have been more charming or welcoming. The house is beautifully situated immediately on the lake with fabulous views all round. We were given excellent recommendations for eating out, local sightseeing and activities.

Attention to detail always makes a difference – a helpful map to find Les Raciness easily; arriving late, Vera booked a lovely restaurant (great view, delicious food) a short walk along the lake shore; Stanley lent us bikes for our ride to Annecy riding part way to ensure we found the right route. The room was extremely spacious, well-appointed with a fabulous shower. Breakfast was very enjoyable and Vera provided my wife delicious gluten free alternatives. Vera and Stanley were excellent hosts, very friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our two nights stay. We hope to visit them again.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Stanley & Vera Root

  • Lake Annecy is widely reputed to be one of the cleanest lakes in Europe. This is due to a remarkable story of environmental action by the local community more than fifty years ago. Its legacy is clear, silky water which is a delight to swim in.
  • The villa opens directly onto a scenic lakeside path that runs for 2 kilometres to the port of Saint-Jorioz. At the back of the villa is a dedicated cycle/rollerskating path along an old railway line running more than 30 km from Annecy to Albertville.
  • A ten minute walk along the lakeside path leads to a sailing school where dinghies and windsurf boards can be hired and lessons arranged. Further along the path there is the port of Saint-Jorioz where you can hire boats and arrange waterskiing lessons.
  • Just over half an hour's drive away is the ski resort of Semnoz with panoramic views over the French Alps across to Mont Blanc. There are more than eighty other ski stations throughout the French Alps 1-2 hours drive away.
  • Several restaurants lie within easy walking distance of the villa. To the left is a beach restaurant 'Rest-O-Plage' and the relaxed and good value 'Lac et Montagne'. To the right is a fine lake-side restaurant 'Clos Marcel'.
  • Though set in a tranquil location away from neighbours, the villa is just a 5-minute drive away from the amenities of Saint-Jorioz: supermarket, bank, cash machines, pharmacy, doctors, dentists, tennis courts and of course 3 boulangeries for fresh bread.
