Prepare to fall hopelessly in love. Here, in the medieval village of Cabrières, is a cluster of wonderful stone buildings built into the ramparts alongside a 15th-century château. John and Annie, creative and delightful, share a garden heady with the scents of pine, jasmine and roses, and pour love and attention into everything they do. Two-storey Jonquille has a small delicious courtyard with candlelit stone steps to a terrace above; Cecilia has a lofty ceiling and a mezzanine for extra beds (chair-futons for children). Walls are pale, floors are polished wood or ancient-tiled, sturdy beams are painted white, there are marble-top tables made by local artisans and pretty boutis quilts on antique beds. Bathrooms, with retro taps and heated rails, are luxurious. After a day out in Avignon, St Remy, Arles, Orange – remarkable sites all – slip into the crystal waters of the pool, skirted by comfy wooden loungers, fringed by a hedge of bamboo; or find your own secluded corner of the garden. The peaceful mazed village holds all you need and there’s a vineyard a fifteen-minute stroll: drop by for tastings!
