The Experience

Enjoy long lazy meals under the gazebo and raise a glass to the views: little Fayence and Tourrettes lie on the opposite hill, and you can hear the Sunday bells.

A long drive flanked by cedars leads to this Italianate villa, protected from others by a profusion of trees. The large garden spreads across four terraces and the pool is long enough for laps. Inside is atmospheric, with polished floors and frescoes, books, curios and solid antiques. Beautiful beds spread from upstairs to down, and into a garden studio.

Hop on the bikes for breakfast’s croissants; there’s a boulangerie on the road. Climb the hill for markets and shops; the villages are a five-minute drive. Book a table at ‘Le France,’ a wonderful little place in Fayence. In Tourrettes, head straight for the terrace of ‘La Vigne Vincent’ – for wine, tapas, and views.

Reviews

It's an incredibly attractive and substantial country house that is surrounded by nature - mature trees in its grounds and birdsong during the day. The pool is wonderfully large and you feel very private and protected yet are only five minutes drive to two pretty villages, one of the region's top golf courses and a glider school. I loved the charm of the interior decor.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house has a rural setting with a sheep farm below, and two little villages just up the hill. The grounds feel very private. Picturesque Fayence and Tourrettes, with small shops, restaurants and alternating markets, are a steep walk uphill, but only a five-minute drive. There’s a glider club with a restaurant 500m away, and you can canoe, swim and sail on lovely Lac de Saint-Cassien, 18km.

Local points of interest from Christer Pettersson

  • Villa Cambaras was built 200 years ago (plus) by Italian gentry as a small country/hunting estate. In that sense the villa was purpose-built for recreation and entertainment from the very start, hence it is a bit eccentric and utterly charming
  • The property has a driveway is flanked by massive Lebanese cedar trees.
  • The terraced property also has a line of cypresses along the lower border.
  • The pool, 15 by 5 metres, is suitable for swimming lengths.
  • The top rooms have views towards the Fayence village and Chateau de la Puy in Tourrettes, the latter built by the Napoleonic general Fevre who got it as a present for having led the construction of new road infrastructure in Russia.
  • Around the corner in one direction, walking distance across a park, we have an excellent vineyard and around the hill, in the other direction we have a glider airfield that can take you up to see the lower alps and the Riviera from high up

The owners, a Swedish-Irish/South African couple, discovered the villa in 2011 and fell in love at first sight. A caretaker meets and greets.
