The
Experience

Drive down twisty roads through spectacular Provençal scenery to this restored 17th-century farmhouse surrounded by seven hectares of land – the only sound you’ll hear are insects, birds and the rustling of leaves.

There’s plenty of room to spread out, including a vast drawing room with an open fire, two sitting rooms and a well-stocked library; children will love the two playrooms and a TV room with games. The kitchen has space to cook and eat together and leads out onto a shaded terrace, there’s a summer kitchen and a swimming pool in the garden along with a pool house and a sauna.

Walk and cycle straight from the grounds, stock up at the weekly market in Cotignac, a five-minute drive. An open-air cinema runs throughout the summer along with a range of music and cultural festivals. Aix is an hour away and St Tropez and the coast is half an hour further.

Reviews

My first impressions were very positive. Having completed the inspection, I feel the essential beauty of the Domaine St Joseph lies in the thoughtful and unpretentious renovation of the owner. The house radiates a harmonious warmth, fully in keeping with the spirit of the unspoilt countryside beyond.

Location

The neighbourhood

Cotignac, one of several perched villages in the central Var countryside, is dominated by an immense white tufa limestone rock containing troglodyte caves. The village has two important Catholic sanctuaries, Notre Dame des Grâces and St Joseph Monastery. A weekly market is held on Tuesdays and an antique market on Sundays. The surrounding area offers some excellent walking and biking tracks, and you can visit local vineyards or enjoy water sports at Lac du Sainte Croix, half an hour’s drive away.

Local points of interest from Charlotte Baring

  • Local Markets surrounding villages, including Cotignac's own market every Tuesday morning selling a variety of local produce from organic fruit and veg from local smallholdings to locally made olive oil.
  • There are several vineyards in the area and many of these can arrange tastings and / or tours. You will also find the wonderful 'Mirabeau' winery on the main Cours in Cotignac village, with award winning wine and friendly staff.
  • The village of Cotignac is famed for its troglodyte houses which are open to the public for visits. The month of July also brings several music and cultural festivals and open air cinema including the festival du rocher under the stars.
  • The Lac Sainte Croix (30 mins drive) offers watersports including sailing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, pedalos and more. The Gorges du Verdon at the end of the lake also provides a stunning place to go canyoning, abseiling or hiking.
  • Very close to Cotignac, in the neighbouring villages of Correns and Entrecasteaux, there is the opportunity to kayak down the Argens river, which ranges from challenging rapids to calm relaxing stretches between high cliff faces. Full of wildlife.
  • Take a trip down to Saint Tropez and visit the famous Club 55 or hire a small boat near Toulon and head to the Porquerolles islands. All an easy day trip from the domaine.
