Vineyards and glorious views over the Var surround you at this peaceful 17th-century bastide. Inside, all is soothing and airy – Linn and her friendly staff want you to settle in and enjoy the slow pace here. Bedrooms (some upstairs, some down) each bear a painter’s name and have ancient beams, antique pieces, tiled floors, flowers, clouds of soft pillows and views over the gardens; shower rooms have organic cotton towels and sprigs of lavender; gîte guests have an apartment and studio in the grounds. The huge living and dining area invites you to linger: fireplace, arched windows, red leather sofas and interesting paintings; eat here at large wooden tables or out on the pretty front terrace. Food is locally sourced and organic, vegetables are mostly from the garden. Plenty to do: explore the bougainvillea-bright grounds, swim, play petanque or tennis, book a massage or yoga workshop, get stuck into a game of chess – there’s a giant set under the shade of a centuries-old oak tree. You can hire bikes, tours can be arranged and the coast is 30-minutes away. Deeply rural, heaps of charm.
