Apartment of Angels

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône

A stylish haven with rooftop terrace in the heart of St-Rémy: explore the gastronomic and arty delights of Provence

4 beds

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 6

Your own pied-à-terre down the winding streets of St-Rémy-de-Provence; perfect for foodies, art lovers and history buffs. Owner Karen also organises gourmet tours and culinary experiences so it’s easy for you to discover local life. And she’s breathed new life into the old bones of this second-floor apartment in the 14th-century presbytery adjacent to the church. Antique finds from local markets, wrought iron chandeliers, comfy sofas and chairs in greys and beiges marry with exposed stonewalls, oak floors and ancient outlines of monks’ drawings that were uncovered during renovations. The three bedrooms are delicately styled with pretty curtains, covers and cushions. Antique chairs, dressers and soft lighting complete the look. Each has a travertine tiled walk-in en-suite shower room. As you’d expect the kitchen is a triumph for wannabe chefs. Just outside your door, up a very narrow staircase, is access to a charming roof terrace with enviable views, a delicious spot for sundowners. You’re spoilt for things to do: Wednesday market in St-Rémy, Van Gogh walk, Carrières de Lumières in limestone caves and much more.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Karen Stride

  • Footsteps to everything in the village including restaurants, cafés, bars, boulangeries, patisseries, fromagerie, poissonier, little supermarket with excellent butchery, cave-à-vins, chocolatier and a biscuiterie with recipes dating from 14th century.
  • The Wednesday morning outdoor market is not to be missed, colourful and lively with many vendors selling fresh local produce such as fruit and vegetables, olives, cheeses, charcuterie, nougat as well as napery, clothing, and jewellery.
  • Wander through the village to browse in fashion boutiques and lovely specialty shops or to view the many galleries and museums here. Walk in Van Gogh's footsteps to St Paul's where he lived and painted and then visit nearby Glanum, the ancient Roman town.
  • Wine tasting is a delight in the picturesque vineyards of Les Alpilles appellation and we are situated not too far from Chateauneuf-du-Pape and the Côté du Rhône villages.
  • If you're feeling energetic there are walking trails to explore in Les Alpilles (little Alps) where as a boy Nostradamus used to gaze at the stars with his father. His family's house is in the village and there is also a fountain dedicated to him.
  • Ideally situated to discover nearby Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Nimes, Orange, Pont-du-Gard, the Camargue, Les Baux de Provence and the amazing Carrières de Lumières art show in the limestone quarry there.
