The
Experience

Bring a group to fill this imposing château and enjoy its restored grandeur all to yourselves. Built in the hamlet of Pierrerue by a local who made a fortune overseas more than a century ago, its exterior is solid and simple. Inside, it’s more Provencal and large windows flood the rooms with light. Gorgeous painted tiles pattern the floors and elaborate fireplaces sit in the high-ceilinged salon and dining room, with piano for musical guests. Bedrooms are mostly on the first floor, each with touches of colour – pick turquoise and green, red, or pink perhaps. Bathrooms have shiny white metro tiles, original porcelain sinks and baths, one or two with more modern showers. You can while away hours by the pool, stroll the splendid lawns, eat on the huge terrace and admire views of woods and distant Alps. Book the chef next door if you don’t want to cook in the big kitchen, or walk to the bistro in Pierrerue. Plenty more eateries in lively Forcalquier too, five minutes away by car through fields of sunflowers, plus a Monday market.  Go further for the splendours of the Verdon Gorge, Lure mountain or the lovely Luberon.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Martine Thioly

  • The hamlet is at the end of a road, almost in the middle of nowhere! There are artists’ ateliers in the hamlet and they work in iron, sculpture and porcelain.
  • A classical music festival happens each year in the second two weeks of July: Festival de musique de Haute-Provence.
  • There is an equestrian centre nearby which means you can go on some beautiful rides in the surrounding hills.
  • You can set off from the château on lots of wonderful walks in the wild Luberon countryside without meeting a soul apart from the wildlife.
  • Don’t miss eating at the Resto de Pays in Pierrerue which is run by Maryvonne et Mark who serve the best beef followed by a delicious cheesecake.
