The
Experience

Your simple gîte is attached to Chris and Michelle’s wisteria-covered stone house. Inside, all is fresh, cosy and cottagey – a practical launch pad for heading out and exploring Vienne and the Charente. The open-plan ground floor has a kitchen in the corner, dining table and chairs for two, sofas with colourful cushions. Up wooden stairs to your beamed, blue bedroom – hop back down for the bathroom. No need to rush off to the shops when you get there – Chris and Michelle leave you a welcome meal on the first night, and all you need for a croissant, jam and coffee breakfast. You have your own seating area in front, with barbecue, and you can wander at will in the lovely garden (shared with your hosts’ B&B guests and a collection of cats), snooze in a hammock, laze in a walled, sun-trap pool, read under the olive trees with the scents of rosemary and lavender in the air. Charming Ruffec (watermill and abundance of shops) and the Valley of the Monkeys are nearby, along with heaps of local markets and historic buildings; Poitiers and Limoges are easy to reach too.

Reviews

Hosts Chris and Michelle (and their wonderfully friendly clowder of cats) could have done nothing more to make us welcome: their company and conversation a delight, the breakfasts and dinners exquisite, the pool and hammocks peaceful and relaxing. Le Chat Noir oozes rustic charm and is perfectly situated for days out to, for example, La Rochelle, Ile de Re, Montmorillon, Oradour-sur-Glane, Poitiers, Limoges, Sauze-Vaussais, Taize-Aizie. There are fabulous restaurants nearby and a great music scene. The roads are quiet, the countryside stunning, the people friendly and welcoming. A perfect gem.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Chris & Michelle Burns

  • For a rural location we are in the middle of a vibrant music scene. Open mic sessions at various local bars, annual summer music festival "Au fil du son" in July and much more. Come along and join in.
  • A must see is La Vallee des Singes (monkey valley), where you can stroll through the wooded area and islands observing, whilst being observed by, the amazing mix of primates. Just 20 minutes away.
  • Visit the picturesque towns of Nanteuil (ancient abbey and aboretum) and Verteuil (fairytale chateau overlooking the Charente river). Both have excellent restaurants and are only 15 minutes away.
  • See the yachts in the beautiful harbour and explore the old town of La Rochelle. Then cross the bridge to the chic island of Ile de Re with fabulous beaches and sea food restaurants. Both within 2 hours reach.
  • Step back in time at the preserved town of Oradour Sur Glane, only 60 minutes away. Here, you'll find a 1940s french town where the Nazis massacred the population. Be warned, it's a sobering, informative and atmospheric experience.
  • For the motor enthusiasts we are ideally placed for the charity 500 Ferraris rally at the Circuit Val de Vienne. Or the classic car rally in September at the Circuit des remparts in Angouleme, overflowing with Bugattis, Morgans, Aston Martins and much more
