You’re in the sticks here, surrounded by deer, boar and birds, with log fires to warm in winter and wine tasting tours on hot summer days. Stop off on the drive south to spend a few days among Madeleine’s mannequins and china dolls; just you and the huddle of Viking sheep and the Norwegian forest cats. Climb up a winding wooden staircase to the second floor for your suite with Gustavian furniture and French market finds. A Scandi palette of serene greys and white is a soothing backdrop to your little nook and the bath has field views. Breakfast is taken outside on the terrace in the freshest air – local croissants, homemade jam, cheeses and meat. Take a stroll around the greenest of gardens with ancient trees, cycle for miles along the quietest roads, find your own bargains in the brocante markets of Charente.

A one night treat! Simply magical; a wonderland of whites, ivories, pale greys. Beautiful fabrics, worn painted furniture and reclaimed objets adorn this 'maison de maître'. Madeleine and Joe were so warm and welcoming; we loved it!

Alison, Melleran

Beautiful house in a quiet rural area, the kind you do not want to leave in a hurry..Peaceful and calm...... I loved it there. Jo and Madeline were great hosts and sometimes, just sitting in the grounds around sunset was enough to make you feel renewed.

The neighbourhood

Rougnac is at the heart of the Charente, halfway between Bordeaux and Limoges, surrounded by miles of green. Montaurand is set back from the road behind imposing iron gates, sheep to one side and a chestnut forest on the other. The rampart town of Angouleme is 25km, while lovely Brantome and its bridges and backstreets is 35km in the opposite direction. There are a handful of shops in Rougnac but Villebois-Lavalette (11km) has a boulangerie and restaurants.

Local points of interest from Jo Lee

  • Your private suite comprises a large room with king bed overlooking the gardens and fields, an ensuite bathroom with bath and freestanding shower and a private sitting room off a small corridor. Note: There is a 20E supplement for a single night stay
  • This is Brocante country - everyday in the summer there are brocantes and food markets for you to visit. Sample the atmosphere, enjoy the food, go shopping for french antiques - we can tell you where to go & provide a local paid guide to show you around
  • Angouleme is the centre of fun in the region with the yearly coming festival, vintage car rally and so much more - the old town is stunning with lovely restaurants and the les halles and victor hugo food markets as well as the main line tgv to paris
  • Lots of restaurants to choose from within a reasonable drive whether you prefer a working man's menu de jour in a brasserie or something more 'michelin'. Most of the food markets have a variety of vendors and restaurants on market days
  • We are a short hop by car from the dordogne border giving access to the beautiful towns of Brantome, Riberac, Aubeterre, Perigeaux, as well as to the west the wine country from Cognac and Bordeaux. Isle de Re is just over 2 hours drive if you fancy the sea
  • Villebois lavalette is our lovely local town with a lovely saturday market, several restaurants, boulangerie, butchers and the local super market - you can go round the castle set high on the hill and look out over the rolling valleys of the charente
