The
Experience

This is a gem of a place to stay, both grand and intimate. Béatrice inherited the exquisitely French neo-gothic château and she lovingly protects it from the worst of modernisation (though the hurricane took its toll and trees have had to be replanted). Sleep between antique linen sheets, sit in handsome old chairs and be charmed by a bedroom in a tower. The sitting room has that unusual quirk, a window over the fireplace, the dining room a panelled ceiling studded with plates. Béatrice, a teacher, and Christopher, a lecturer in philosophy, are interesting, cultured hosts who enjoy eating with their guests.

Reviews

Beautiful, comfortable property and wonderful, engaging hosts. The room was elegant and thoughtfully presented. Breakfast in the main dining room was delightful. There was much conversation and Christopher, Béatrice and I went out for dinner to a local chateau (Chalais) where the ambience was remarkable and the food excellent. The grounds of Le Chatelard are perfect for relaxing - and listening to tolling of the Angelus bell, donated to the church by Béatrice's family. Her roots dive deep in Passirac, and after even only a day there you feel that yours do too, a little. I shall return.

WE STAYED IN 2003 AND AGAIN IN 2005 WITH OUR DAUGHTER SON-IN-LAW AND THREE DAUGHTERS WHO WERE GIVEN A ROOM IN THE TURRET WHICH THEY LOVED. WE HOPE TO GO BACK ONE DAY SOON.

If you are anywhere near you must stay here - it is beautiful. Beatrice and Christopher are charming hosts. We arrived early and Christopher invited us to swim in the nearby lake. We didn't have a towel to hand so he lent us his already wet one - be prepared for almost anything! Funny how we felt at home in a chateau.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Béatrice de Castelbajac & Christopher Macann

  • Nearby sports complex (1 mile) with squash (Christopher will join you if you need a partner), indoor heated pool and swimming lake for the summer.
  • There is a town market on Monday mornings nearby. Cognac and St Emilion are both worth taking a day trip to.
  • The Chatelard is quite close one of the most beautiful villages of France (Aubeterre), not far from the sea with its beaches at Royan and its historic port of La Rochelle. La Tremblade, Cognac and Saint Emilion are also located within a hour’s drive.
  • There are lots of old Romanesque and Gothic churches to be found in the vicinity, as also Chateaux dating from the middle ages where, in summer, concerts are held.
  • Bordeaux is one hour away with its famous wines, its old city centre and its reconstructed docklands now made over to tourism. Spoil yourself in this calm, poetic and restful spot.
  • The Castelbajac family will be happy to receive you with humour and sympathy, accompanied by conservations of philosophically challenging quality.
