The Experience

This classic stone farmhouse lies in a valley between rolling fields of sunflowers and vines, and although it feels peaceful and remote you’re only 10 minutes from Angoulême and half an hour from Cognac.

Davina, her son and friendly dog live here with their several horses. Guest spaces decked out in natural materials and muted shades are split into two buildings, one with a sitting room, dining room and kitchen. Simple breakfasts include locally-made grape juice, artisanal brioche and yogurt, viennoiseries, and fruit and homemade jams from the orchard or nearby organic farm shop.

There are 30 hectares of private grounds to explore or you can sit out in the garden with a book. A path leads through countryside to the village of Marsac, 3 km away, which has a lake with a beach, a snack bar and shaded river access. The house is also the perfect stop off en route to Bordeaux or further south.

Accommodation

Reviews

Davina is charming and very in touch with her surroundings, so passionate about her horses and her home, all so cleverly put together on a budget. The house offers stylish, simple lodgings and feels as natural as it's surroundings. It's green credentials have won her awards and while some may find it a bit isolated, there is plenty of room to relax, breathe and enjoy all the nature on the doorstep.

Location

The neighbourhood

Angoulême is just 10 minutes away by car and has several shops and restaurants - Davina recommends Le Tire Bouchon, which has a great wine selection, or Garden Cupcakes for organic and vegan options. The pretty and historic village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is an hour away, as is the enchanting riverside town of Brantôme in the Perigord Vert. Montignac, about 15 minutes away, has an ancient dungeon to visit and there is a magnificent abbey at Saint-Amant-de-Boixe, a little further on.

Local points of interest from Davina Weitowitz

  • You can take a walk on the farm, observe our horses in their natural environment, watch wildlife or take a walk to the Charente river along chalk tracks, which border protected 'Natura 2000' hills.
  • We are happy to lend you bikes to visit the Chateau de Balzac for example, or to simply go for a swim in the river.
  • Angoulême, with its quaint little streets is just 12km away. We can recommend restaurants with good local fresh food and wine and tell you where to get the best chocolate brownies in town!
  • Rent a canoe in Vindelle and explore the river - you can even take a picnic and make a day-trip of it. The Charente river is lush and beautiful.
  • There are lots of flea markets, festivals and other events in the Charente in summer - we can advise on where to go when!
  • If you like architecture, enjoy the hundreds of roman churches in the region, it's castles and a lovely gallo-roman amphitheatre just minutes away from our farm.

Introducing

Davina Weitowitz

Davina is German-Italian and worked as a TV journalist in Frankfurt. She left city life to pursue her passion for horses and set up the livery yard instead, where she offers a very specific type of boarding: recreating the migration paths they would use in the wild. She is resilient, organised, energetic and passionate about nature, her animals and home, as well as being very eco-conscious. She adores it here!
