The
Experience

An idyllic spot: minutes from Marennes’ market square (fishmongers, world-famous oysters, restaurants, bars) and sands and surf a jog away (3km). As for the house, tucked down a winding street, surrounded by gardens and smartly walled lawns, it’s a dream, its French-blue shutters and broad stone staircase blending beautifully with a characterful Scandinavian décor. Lots of rooms upstairs, a downstairs double with its own terrace, heaps of bathrooms and loos, and now two bedrooms in the newly converted self-contained barn. Ideal for a family of six, this new space interconnects if you need. There’s more: a garden of winding pathways and bursting flowers, a barbecue off the kitchen, bikes, a pool and, in the unlikely event of the weather being other than gorgeous, a games room with table tennis, a log fire and satellite TV. Décor is a soothing blend of rough plaster and dusky grey; the wonderful big kitchen is the heart of the house. Simple bedrooms have playful touches – lavender parcels on pillows, giant canvas family photos, a few retro colours… and there’s even a blackboard for you to plan your excursions. Fabulous.

Our group varied in age from 11 to 60+ and in number from 6 to 11. The spacious house easily accommodated everyone and the rooms were very comfortable. The situation is ideal, a 5 minute stroll from the market and a few minutes more to the supermarket. There are many picturesque places to visit. We all made full use of the pool and the younger ones enjoyed using the games room and all the games provided for indoors and out. The bicycles were great for exploring. September was an ideal time to visit - warm during the day but slightly cooler at night making sleeping easier. We'll be back!

We stayed at Maison Marennes this month for a family holiday as a group of 7 adults and 2 children. There was plenty of space with a couple of rooms left over. The villa is beautiful, very well decorated, lovely furnishings and the kitchen and lounge are great places to socialise. The villa is equipped to a very high level and it feels like a home from home. Marennes itself is a little quiet but there are plenty of things to do in the area; good beaches on the island, La Rochelle, Palmyra Zoo and vineyards so you won't be stuck. Just Lazing by the pool and eating in at the villa is great.

An excellent set up for our large family mix and five children under four and we had a wonderful holiday in Marennes. The house is very comfortable and has lots of different areas inside and out for people to congregate or separate. Lots of wonderful extras such as the bikes, pool toys and others galore. All much appreciated. The bedroom fans and two extra delivered were a lifesaver in our heat wave week. A small niggle was that we could have done with some more wall storage in the kitchen - multitude of plates and dishes rather squished into one low cupboard.

Maison Marennes is the idyllic holiday choice! Me and my family (of 3 kids ages 3,7 and 10) have taken a summer rental most years since 2011. We keep returning. The house is stunning in an enclosed garden, equipped as well (or better!) as any family home. The location is perfect for easy access from several airports and there are countless amenities in the region to avail of plus the house is strolling distance from restaurants and shops aswell as 7 min from the beach. There is a warm family atmosphere to the house, perfect for small or large groups of people. Can not recommend enough!

Just returned from a wonderful holiday at Maison Marennes. The house was everything it promised to be and more! We were 11 adults and found the house well equipped for us all. There was plenty of space for us to be together but most importantly plenty of space for everyone to find their own little haven of peace and quiet! The pool, the bikes and the games room were well used by the under 35's, whist those of us over 60 enjoyed Marennes and the surrounding area. We will all remember this as a very special holiday destination.

This house delivers everything you need for a great holiday - location, size, space, ambience, facilities - I even played my first Ping Pong in years. There are things to do in good weather (fab pool particularly) and when the decides to stay in for a bit (including said Ping Pong!). Marennes is a lovely place - not touristy at all but with friendly restaurants, local shops, a lively market and lots of places to go nearby - we loved feeding apples to the elephants at the zoo...take two bags if you go, it's worth it! Young, old or somewhere in between...this house is perfect. Enjoy.

What a fantastic family holiday we all had complete with girlfriends and friends. The house is beautiful with a lovely pool and the games room a real bonus. Private but with the town a short walk away with a magnificent church towering over everything. Just loved walking to the town in the morning for fresh baguettes and exploring the area rich in oyster beds. A very French experience and a very special place to stay.

This was such a special place. It catered beautifully for the needs of our family of three generations, which included two small but very active little boys. The house is spacious and well equipped with the magical quality of making everyone feel totally relaxed. The outside area is equally lovely with a well maintained pool, great lounging areas, including a shaded eating area and also ample space just to play. From the oldest to the youngest, everyone found what they needed and all were delighted.

What joy to find such a unique , intriguing and perfect home .- this is the Gite one searches for. A stroll past the pale, sky blue door reveals nothing of the delights which lie beyond and within. Open the door and there it is ... not a room, not a wardrobe but a secret garden which gently guides on etch rough to this wonderful house . A group of artists would find Maison Marennes the perfect venue for a painting holiday. Then, along the criss- crossing canals of Marennes , ponder the colours of an evening sky, the vibrancy and grace of sailing boats old and new . Heavenly

Maison Marennes is a lovely combination of an old style French home together with an adjoining, recently converted, barn which provides splendid accommodation for varying numbers of guests. Outside, the walled garden is large & private & there is a wonderful pool. The shops & supermarket are only a short stroll away & there is an interesting fresh fruit & vegetable market every week. This property is obviously a real home-from-home for the owners and their children. Everything has been left available for the paying guests which gives a lovely warm, relaxing & welcoming feel to your stay.

Local points of interest from Joan Groves

  • Lovely small French town centred round a traditional market house where local producers sell their wares three times a week. Great fish, delicious cheeses and the freshest of fruit and veg
  • excellent restaurants in walking distance all frequented by the local people so you know they are good! Finish your meal with the local 'Café Gourmand' a little of every sweet with a shot of expresso
  • Marennes is of course the city of huitres so expect to see oysters on all the menus
  • Great cycling countryside so the house has ten bikes for our guests use, including those for wee ones as well as for Mums Dads, Grannies or teenagers
  • Great beaches for all ages - try bodyboarding in the fabulous breakers of La Grande Plage on the west coast of Ile d'Oleron or take your toddlers to the nearby sheltered lagoon of Marennes plage
  • visit the renowned Zoo in La Palmyre or take a half hour drive to Mornac-sur-sierre, listed as one of the 'Plus beaux villages de France'. Wander the cobbled streets with charming art galleries, craft workshops, great eateries & atmospheric old church
