The
Experience

Cats laze in the sun and hollyhocks line the summer streets of the old residential area around La Maison Bleue. It’s a comfortably converted wine-making property where the big living room with a fireplace at one end, kitchen at the other, will be the indoor hub of your holiday.

It’s a huge bonus in a seaside town to have such a big walled garden: children romp on the lawn; everyone gathers for meals out in the lushly planted, decked courtyard. A couple of minutes’ stroll has you among the shops and places to eat at Bois Plage; a couple more and you’re down on the beach, perhaps with a post-surfing plate of moules frîtes at the beach bar.

The ile de Ré is all about cycling… to other beaches and villages, markets, wineries and chocolateries. Wild areas of the island are well protected so you can escape all bustle or, if needed, head for La Rochelle.

Reviews

A charming no-fuss bolthole in one of popular Ile de Re's loveliest villages, a short walk to the beach with a garden. Low-key and heavenly.

Location

The neighbourhood

Bois Plage is one of the ile de Ré’s prettiest villages and you’re 200m from its restaurants - try The Océan for a French seafood treat - boutiques and daily market in summer. Cycling the network of paths is THE way to explore the island; 700m away is the nearest beach for swimming, sunbathing and surfing – with surf school and beach bar. And it’s 20 minutes’ drive, over the bridge, to La Rochelle.

Local points of interest from Martine Cadre

  • We have 2 outside spaces to enjoy - a lawned garden and a patio - both completely walled and not overlooked. Perfect for leaving your bikes and children's toys.

Introducing

Martine Cadre

Parisians Martine and Olivier fell for the charms of the ile de Ré before the bridge to the mainland was built in 1988 when the locals lived mostly by fishing and vegetable-growing. Their now grown-up daughters leaned to surf here and the whole family comes as often as they can to slow down and to catch up with friends. Local, English-speaking, housekeepers will greet you and are on hand should you need them.
