The
Experience

Built in 1633, this mellow-stone former cognac store is part of a terrace on the banks of the languid Boutonne. Here lives Clare, full of life, with a love of people and an eye for detail: cotton buds in bathrooms, honey from the market, umbrellas by the door! All is tranquil and delightful inside, from the first-floor salon with its gorgeous grand fireplace and inviting cream sofas, to the bedrooms with their delicious pale-stone walls; there’s also a tip-top guest kitchen. Atlantic beaches are a 40-minute drive, restaurants are a stroll, and a children’s park and café lie on the other side of the river.

Reviews

What a delightful place! Sadly, we only stayed one night en route further south but hope to return. Everything was perfect, from the crisp, white bed linen and fluffy towels to the home-made plum and orange compote for breakfast. The house is beautifully decorated and furnished with great attention to detail. Clare is an excellent host, who made us feel very welcome. We would definitely recommend a visit.

Absolutely lovely place to stay, so comfortable and welcoming. Our two little boys slept really well in the little room next to ours which was a great set up for a family of four. Thank you for looking after us so well! we will be back.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Clare Pickering

  • An easy 10 minute walk to the heart of Medieval Saint Jean D'Angely, with its selection of restaurants and bars. There is plenty to see and do, explore the twice weekly market, the abbey, climb the clock tower or just wander the cobbled streets.
  • Facing onto the Boutonne river, there are wonderful walks to stretch your legs at the end of a long drive, a play area for the children, a huge swimming pool complex, boules and even canoeing or pedaloes for the keen - all within a couple of minutes walk.
  • There are many great days out from L'Etoile , perhaps a tour of Saintes, Cognac, or Surgeres, a Pineau de Charentes tasting, or retrace parts of the Santiago de Compostela route. All within an short easy drive.
  • A 35 minute drive also brings you to the beautiful coast. Fabulous beach days can be had at Royan, Fouras, Chataillon and the idylic Iles de Re, Oleron and Aix. All the beaches are sandy, safe and unspoilt. Enjoy oysters and meet donkeys in trousers!
  • Carp fishing on the Boutonne outside the house is popular locally, and tennis, golf, cycling and walking are all available locally too.
  • Saint Jean hosts a twice weekly market. There is always a fabulous array of local produce, fruit, vegetables, local cheeses and honey and of course fish and seafood. Buy a selection to prepare in the kitchen at L'Etoile or for a picnic by the river!
