The
Experience

A short stroll from Chateau d’Oléron’s tree-lined market square is an elegant hotel that first welcomed guests in the 17th century. Charming owners Laetitia and Marc bought and renovated the original hotel in 2004, extending into adjoining properties to create eight stylish en-suite rooms. Window boxes and pale blue shutters add a flash of colour to the fresh, whitewashed façade, while striking work by local artists is displayed in the salon and the bedrooms. Tranquillity reigns here – sleep deeply in wonderfully comfortable beds and pamper yourself with delicious Keiji products… Oléron is famous for seafood, particularly oysters and mussels; gourmands can indulge in regional specialities in the intimate dining room or eat al fresco in the luscious plant-filled courtyard. If you can bear to leave Jardins d’Aliénor, the island is crisscrossed with footpaths and cycleways, and framed by sandy beaches where you can take to the water on a surfboard, sailing boat or canoe. Back on the mainland, admire Royan’s Belle Époque villas or take a day-trip to La Rochelle.

Local points of interest from Laetitia Le Reun

  • Only a few steps from the hotel are the artisan villages. The artists, who are set up in old sea huts, invite you to come discover their passion; don't hesitate to push open the doors of their ateliers. Some have even decorated our home with their works.
  • Only 2 mins away, 'la Citadelle' is an incomparable tourist spot. Richard the Lionheart ordered it to be built in 1630, and numerous architects, such as Vauban, have taken part in the construction. One can now understand why our rooms are so named.
  • The Gautrelle beach, our favourite...Only 30 mins by car and you arrive at this charming beach of fine sand, situated in the North-East of the island. Its location offers a magnificent viewpoint of the Isle of Aix and of Fort Boyard.
  • After 45mins on board the 'P'tit Train de Saint-Trojan' , you disembark on the beach at Pertuis de Maumusson, inaccessible by car. This area is renowned by sailors, as the sea there is quite wild. Some advice for nature-lovers, this show is captivating.
  • In the heart of winter, and for a century now, the Mimosas brighten up and embalm the streets of the Isle of Oléron. A great 'Fête du Mimosa' takes place every year in February. Ask us for the date of the next event!
