Atelier JC

St. Pierre d'Amilly, Charente-Maritime

A delightful gîte for 6 with pool near Venise Verte & La Rochelle, ideal for families and groups: boating, cycling, sea, history…

4 beds

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 6

Hidden behind stone walls on the road through the little village is a lovely surprise of character and comfort. The three-centuries-old converted barn was once a wine press, an apple store and a stained-glass workshop (‘JC’ was the artist) before its conversion into a traditional/modern gîte that families and groups will love. With one main kitchen/dining room, and a sitting room with comfy sofas set around the wood-burner and fine stone fireplace (logs supplied in winter), it combines conviviality and independence. The new heated pool in the private garden is a delightful focus. Oak beams and stone walls, a clever mezzanine linking the two parts of the house, good beds, variegated window patterns that reveal the building’s history, and calm, understated décor all make for a memorably comfortable place to stay. Atelier JC is perfect for discovering “green Venice,” as the canal-laced wetlands are called. Explore the Atlantic coast and its islands; Île de Ré’s medieval market in La Flotte, the unsung city of Saintes and, of course, historic La Rochelle. And there’s a great crêperie in the village.

Our family of 2 adults and 3 children stayed at La Maison for 2 weeks in August 2016. The property is just perfect, a beautiful gite which far exceeded our expectations. It has everything needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay, is spacious and well equipped and makes a wonderful base for exploring the local area as well as somewhere to sit back and relax. The heated pool, and garden with the shaded conservatory, all contribute to a perfect spot to unwind, and make for some great alfresco dining. Mick and Carole couldn't have made us feel more welcome.

We really enjoyed our week in St Pierre d'Amilly. Our hosts were very helpful and friendly. The house and pool were lovely - all that we required. We would definitely recommend it again - but not before we make another visit!!

We have just returned from a great 2 week stay at Atelier JC. Lovely old building full of character that was immaculately clean when we arrived, lovely comfy beds and sofas. Quiet location but close enough to all tourist areas. We spent many a sunny evening in the garden and by the pool. The owners Mick and Carol could not have been more welcoming. We hope to return very soon as this really was a lovely holiday in a beautiful area.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Mick Williams

  • We're just 40kms from La Rochelle; a gorgeous town, steeped in history, and elegance. A lovely place to wander round, shop and eat, with parks and beaches. Take the taxi boat to Les Minimes, or a boat trip to Fort Boyard en route for a day at Ile d'Aix.
  • We're right on the doorstep of the beautiful Marais region. Discover the multitude of canals and pretty villages by bike, by foot, or by boat. A great place to start from is Arcais, and "La Bicyclette Verte". Our favourite place to get a boat is La Mazeau,
  • We love the Ile de Re, its beaches and pretty villages. Best way to see the island is by bike, with 100 kms of lanes! Seaside sports and activies within very easy reach including sailing, kite surfing and surfing (head for Le Bois Plage on the Ile de Re)
  • Chatelaillon is a very family focused resort, and is our nearest beach - only 25 mins away. Here you will find a lovely beach with a kids' club - a great place to leave them, while you look around the markets and enjoy the cafes.
  • This is a fantastic area for bird watching, with a bird sanctuary at St Hilaire la Palud in the Marais, and nature reserves on the Ile de Ré.
  • There is an excellent restaurant/creperie/bar, right on the edge of our village, just a 15 minute walk. Run by very friendly Belgians, La Ferme Flamande is open every lunchtime and Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Great plat du jours, steaks, galettes
