Madeleine – energetic, vivacious – welcomes you with interesting conversation and a fine dinner table dressed in silver. Set back from the road behind fence and clipped hedge are three immaculate, classically furnished bedrooms: books and fresh flowers, a calvados nightcap on the landing.

There’s a conservatory for breakfast with long, lovely views, a cosy front room for relaxing, drinks in the garden and French suppers in the dining room.

You can walk from the door to the fairy-tale château of Mesnières-en-Bray, pedal along the Avenue Verte through rich farmland, visit local gardens or take bracing clifftop walks along the Normandy coast. Monet’s dreamy landscapes, Dieppe, Rouen, Somme, Honfleur: all are wonderfully close.

The house has a lovely garden and the view from the breakfast room towards the Avenue Verte is amazing - you won't want to leave! The château at Mesnieres-en-Bray is very easy to walk to and Madeleine is a wonderful hostess.

The possibility of dining at Grand Rue was very attractive after a day driving back towards Calais from the south, and we were not disappointed. Peter and Madeline looked after us very well, and conversation around the communal dining table was very easy - I am sure Peter's wines were a significant element, though each course of the food was equally delicious. Many thanks for a very enjoyable stay.

Our second visit was as wonderful as the first. Peter and Madeline are the perfect host and hostess. Do stay for dinner, Madeline is an excellent cook and Peter knows his wines. Beautifully appointed rooms, an extremely comfortable bed. We've stayed here at the end of two wonderful holidays in France and both times it was the perfect ending. We'd love to return.

A really warm welcome, every comfort in the room and delicious food and wine; I can't praise Madeleine & Peter enough for being such lovely hosts. If you had time to linger for a few days the self catering Grange is really comfortable, too and there is lots to do and see in this beautiful area of France.

Lovely, welcoming hosts. Excellent accommodation. Fantastic directions. Wonderful food. A perfect stop for anyone doing the Avenue Verte as it's a five minute walk from the track.

Most friendly and welcoming hosts. A very pleasant and comfortable stay with a delicious dinner in good company. An ideal stop on the way outward or homeward bound via Calais

Five of us stayed with Madeleine and Peter on our way home from the Charente Maritime area. Their B&B is delightful and they are charming hosts. Peter is a font of knowledge about wine and Madeleine is a fantastic cook - we spent a very pleasant evening with them in their lovely quiet and peaceful home. We can certainly highly recommend this B&B and will hopefully have the opportunity to stay there again.

My wife Jean and I together with our friends Tina and Alan stayed here on our return from a break in the Loire. We found the property very beautiful and hosts Madeleine and Peter absolutely charming. We took up the option of an evening meal cooked by Madeleine, ably partnered by Peter who imparted much of his knowledge on wines. Many thanks to you both for a wonderful stay.

We keep returning to Grand Rue as we love it so much. Madeleine & Peter are delightful hosts and very good company. Our room was very comfortable, especially the bed and pillows, and there is everything we could possibly need in the bathroom. We stayed in La Grange on the way down for the first time and wished we could have been there all week. As well as central heating, it has a large wood burner which must make it a really cosy place to stay in the winter. Highly recommended.

I can only echo the positive feedback left by other visitors. It is a very lovely area to explore with many great gardens and chateaus to visit. Peter and Madeleine are great hosts. The food is fantastic, can't wait to go back.

Peter's welcome could hardly have been kinder after a rather late arrival and a long journey. The house is delightfully furnished, with lots of superb oak and oak-style furniture, and conveys a feeling of real warmth. My room was immaculate; and peter joined us after supper for a most stimulating and worthwhile conversation. What a splendid place.

...and we did stay again, this time in winter...it was just as good the second time around. Madeleine and Peter were so kind and welcoming, allowing us to stay en route to the UK, and just before Christmas too. Thank you again for the warm welcome, the light supper which was delicious and the comfortable nights sleep in your lovely chambre d'hotes.

A great overnight stop on our way south within easy reach of Calais. A wonderful warm welcome from generous hosts . Fabulous meals and very comfortable accommodation and great company made this one to remember.

Highly, highly recommended. Superb accommodation, a very warm welcome from Peter and Madeleine, delicious food and great wine. The atmosphere is homely and friendly and the guest rooms are very well appointed.

Lovely house, warm reception, excellent and thoroughy enjoyable evening meal. We stopped here en route to Paris on our cycles and were delighted with both the place and with the owners Madelaine & Peter who even went so far as offering to give one of us (who had been unwell when we arrived the previous evening) a lift to our next stop. Highly recommended, particularly for Route Verte cyclists wanting somewhere to stop 20 miles or so out of Dieppe.

My friend and I stayed at 23, Grande Rue on a short cycling trip to the Avenue Verte. It was fantastic and Madelaine and Peter could not have been more attentive hosts. The room was very nice, the food and wine exceptional. A great base for a cycling (or any other transport) trip from Dieppe. I stupidly left one of my favourite tee shirts in the room when I left and within a couple of days they had posted it back to me in the UK with no charge. How good is that? I would certainly return if I go back to that area. I thoroughly recommend it.

The neighbourhood

The house is in the village of Mesnières-en-Bray, deep in Normandy’s cheese and cider country with lovely gardens all around and a Loire-esque château a 10-minute walk away. You’re bang on the Avenue Verte cycle path from London to Paris, a convenient stopping point for long drives south too. Neufchatel, with its heart-shaped cheese, is a 10-minute drive; within 35 minutes is Dieppe which has a lively Saturday market, Rouen with its Gothic cathedral and astronomical clock, and the long, sandy beaches of the coast.

Madeleine Mitchell

Madeleine was in the wine trade, which explains her deep knowledge and the great labels which accompany her sumptuous French cooking. Her two grown up sons and assortment of grandchildren descend regularly – entertaining is her forte, so expect lively conversation.
