It’s impossible not to feel happy in this maison de maître (one of several that housed the ribbon weavers of Normandy), set in the fields of the Normandy plains, with a dreamy garden and a cider producer right next door. Breakfast is at one long table and includes freshly-squeezed orange juice, good coffee and delicious pastries.Your hosts, courteous and charming, will happily tell you about the region, starting with Bernay, 20 minutes away: it has a medieval abbey and the oldest church in Normandy. Cormeilles too is close, a very pretty place with a calvados distillery you can visit. The tours and the tastings are excellent. This is great walking and cycling territory and criss crossed with quiet roads, so pack up a picnic and discover sleepy villages. Return to a panelled drawing room and lofty bedrooms with handsome windows overlooking the garden and the fields beyond. Peacefulness reigns.

Love the place and people, and would love to stay there myself.

Georgina, Sawday's inspector

Beautiful house and garden and lovely hosts who made our short stay such a delight. Very quirky but in all the right ways! Lovely rooms and lovely dinner and breakfast. Couldn't have asked for more. We'll be back

Simon, Stroud

our 4th stay here. Lovely, Marie-Helene is an excellent host and prepares lovely evening meals and a superb breakfast. The rooms are nicely furnished and very comfortable beds. Another excellent stay and no doubt we will return again

The neighbourhood

The lush surroundings call for country walks and cycle rides. Or a trip in the car to the canal town of Pont-Audemer (25 mins) with a charming farmers’ market (less touristy than those of Deauville and Honfleur). Castles and chateaux abound: Beumesnil (30km), “Normandy’s Versailles” but without the guides or the crowds; medieval d’Harcourt (30km), with the oldest arboretum in France; and the vast Champs de Bataille (35km), home to an exceptional garden.

Marie-Hélène François & Hughes de Morchoven

Marie-Hélène and her husband, ex-Parisians both, are warm, attentive and delightful hosts. You could not be in better hands.
