The Experience

The thick thatch roof of this Norman-style farmhouse is a fitting end to your journey into the countryside to find it. Only after a trek down a long village lane and parking among the azaleas and rhododendrons do you really catch sight of the elusive hotel itself. Extensions to the original timbered building give it an eclectic air despite the ubiquity of the thatch and in contrast with the motif of the eponymous cockerel, represented in every form from sculpture to tapestry. The bedrooms are simpler, with understated comfort and modern bathrooms lit up by the occasional antique and most rooms sporting balconies where the lush vegetation gives shade and privacy. The garden however, as with most of the hotel, is centred around providing for the restaurant. Here you find a menu as diverse as the décor is constant. The rustic, cosy dining room serves up not just fowl but Foie gras, lobster, veal sweetbreads and beef fillet throne among others. If the occasionally hefty prices make you head for town, then historic Rouen and coastal Deauville, both around 40 minutes away, will sate all your senses on any budget.

Reviews

We received a lovely warm welcome. You should really opt for the evening meal at the hotel restaurant if you stay - our dinner was outstanding. The menu was original with lots of locally sourced products. We opted for a wine selection tailored to each course which was exceptional. Pretty gardens and comfortable room. Call out for an especially great shower.

Local points of interest from Fabienne Huard

  • You would like to enjoy relaxing walking paths ? At the foot of the hotel, numerous ones will allow you to discover wonderful lanscapes without using your car.
  • For impressionists lovers, two visits must be planned : Honfleur, famous harbour in Normandy is only at 28 kms and Giverny, such a lovely place, will greet you after a one-hour driving.
  • Why not complete your stay with a few historical visits ? We are very close to the beach battlefields and the Caen Memorial is only at 70 kms. Both places will affect you for a long time.
  • If you like castles, you'll love Château du Champ de Bataille, built in 1651. You will love the gardens, beautifully kept with lovely topiaries. Combine this with the Harcourt Castle and Arboretum, with events throughout the year.
  • The Bec-Hellouin Abbey is described as a « haven of calmness » by our guests. This majestic abbey, built in 1034 was twinned for 1000 years with the Canterbury abbey ! Discover beautiful surroundings, in a road called « The Abbeys Road ».
  • Last but not least, do not miss your visit to Pont Audemer, located at 5 kms from our hotel. This lovely picturesque town is well nicknamed the « Norman Little Venice ».
