The Experience

Guests return because it’s fun to stay here with easy-going Clive at the helm – and a long sociable table for delicious dinners. Perhaps pear and Roquefort tartelette, followed by duck breast and seasonal veggies. Breakfast is a generous spread of pastries, charcuterie, yogurt and fresh fruit in a room off the salon, your host has the fire crackling if its chilly.

Clive has been here since the 1990s and has cleverly renovated this 18th-century farmhouse into a comfortable home. Every feature conveys the creativity of your British host: exposed stone walls; an old manger, now a wine rack; a chimney built from 4,500 bricks.

Deeply comfortable bedrooms have hand-sewn fabrics and fine French antiques. Fish in the wooded grounds; join the ancient pilgrims’ walk to Mont St Michel; go canoeing in nearby Thury-Harcourt.

Reviews

Our stay was brief, but we had a lovely evening, with a fabulous meal. Clive’s cooking is superb!

Anne, East Sussex

Our daughter treated us as a Christmas present to one night in this B &B not far from where we live. A beautiful lounge with comfy sofas round a blazing fire. The meal was delicious and Clive and his supporting help Victoria were very warm, interesting and hospitable. We thoroughly recommend and look forward to returning! Also our dog was made very welcome.

Dining here is a must, Clive cooks an outstanding and sophisticated meal using local, seasonal produce. The huge fireside sofas are irresistible after dinner. A great retreat for a group of friends or equally sociable couples.

What a gorgeous B&B! Just got back from 3 nights at Le Gaudin and I can’t speak highly enough about it! The property is just gorgeous - well maintained and luxurious but comfortable too. The grounds are beautiful and have so much history. Clive was a wonderful host - very welcoming and full of local knowledge. If you’re in Normandy and looking for a top notch place to stay with easy access to all that Normandy has to offer, you won’t find better than Le Gaudin.

Just fabulous. Clive (the owner/chef) has created a truly lovely, comfortable, elegant and very special B&B. Huge rooms, all tastefully decorated. A vast main reception lounge, lovely gardens and so on. Clive is a terrific chef too, and his dinner (with good wine) is well worth having....as good as most 'top' French restaurants. Le Gaudin is also as short drive to the coast, ferries etc. Highly recommended, and my advice is book it!

We stayed at Le Gaudin during the 72nd Anniversary of D-Day. Clive (the owner) was a phenomenal resource for history and site recommendations. The B&B is a very charming place with a historical past. We highly recommend Clive's cooking. He is an amazing cook and it was by far the best meal we had during our 2 1/2 week trek around Europe. Our stay at Le Gaudin was definitely a highlight of our trip!

Kelsey, Denver

Clive is an excellent host who has done an amazing job in renovating this old farm, the rooms are comfortable, spacious and peaceful. His dinners are amazing, definitely good restaurant standard and excellent value for money. All in all we spent a wonderful 3 days at le Gaudin and would definitely recommend the place.

Introducing

Clive Canvin

Clive moved here 20 years ago and set about a pretty daunting renovation. He enjoys welcoming guests and is a great cook. He's friendly, laid-back and has plenty of local knowledge at his fingertips.
