The
Experience

Ping-pong and darts in the outbuilding, two friendly donkeys in the field; this 18th-century longere down the track from the chateau is a super house for family hols. A neat lawn and trimmed hedge await, along with a cheery welcome. John inherited the place from his French mother, and he and Rebecca are kind, friendly hosts. Enter the amazing ground floor, crowned by beams and open to the eaves, with a table for ten at one end and comfy sofas at the other, and a stately stone fireplace. Plants, pictures, ornaments and candles create a friendly, laid-back space, while a tomette-tiled floor runs through to the kitchen, adding a farmhouse feel. Off the corridor are three twin bedrooms, plain, simple and sharing a shower (there’s another, newer shower on the landing). Upstairs, the master bedroom reigns supreme. Huge, open plan and beamy, it’s distinguished by ancient oak studwork; peep through the timbers to your deep bath and twin basins. You can wander the medieval seaport of Honfleur, visit the calvados and cider producers, go riding up the road, dine in Deauville.

Local points of interest from Rebecca Whitehead

  • We're in the heart of the Pays d'Auge country and in 30 minutes you can be on a wonderful sandy beach in Trouville or watching a polo match in Deauville. The amazing harbour in the pretty port of Honfleur is a perfect place to dine and people-watch.
  • You're an hour from the Normandy landing beaches at Arromanches and Omaha, and don't miss the Bayeux tapestry .The stunning historic cities of Rouen and Caen are also well worth a visit.
  • We have three highly renowned golf courses, and sailing, jet skiing, tennis are all close by.There's a tree-top adventure park which caters for all ages, and should you hear lions roaring in the distance, that will be from the amazing Cerza safari park .
  • No holiday would be complete without great food, and there is plenty on offer here from food markets to great restaurants. We can let you know the best addresses for cheese, cider, calvados and much more.
  • Our house is steeped in history and we'll be very happy to tell some of its stories from Louis X111 to the present day. Take a walk in our forest along a woodland trail and look out for roe-deer and maybe a wild boar. There's also a stud farm in the park.
  • Monet's house and garden at Giverny are an hour away. Drive along the majestic meandering Seine and discover the places which inspired so many impressionist painters.Paris is under two hours away either by car or train from Lisieux.
