Bed & Breakfast

Find history, subdued luxury and fine dining in a charming 13th-century castle, within easy reach of Normandy beaches and Bayeux

Your hosts are warm and charming and their attention to detail is impressive. Not everyone can take a 13th-century castle, once owned by the Ducs d’Harcourt, and so successfully blend history with comfort. Expect some subtly bold décor and subdued luxury: Lloyd Loom chairs, marble fireplaces, Egyptian cotton. One bedroom has a curved wooden stair up to a superb bathroom; the apartment is stunning; all face south over the garden. Breakfast includes home-grown fruit, homemade yogurt and eggs from the château’s happy hens. A house for fine dining, too: English china, damask and candelabra set the table in the lovely dining room. David grows – beautifully – for Lesley to cook – deliciously – and his organic potager is a delightful diversion (seven varieties of potato, 50 of vegetable); high stone walls shelter it from unkind winds, fruit trees shade the lawn, long narrow beds make for easy harvesting. The Cravens are keen conservationists, too; barn owls nest in the end wall and there is good bird-watching. The Normandy beaches, Bayeux and its tapestry are within easy reach.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from David & Lesley Craven

  • On our doorstep, the Suisse Normande is a picturesque area of hills and wooded valleys, ideal for walking, riding or canoeing on the River Orne. Cyclists will be interested to learn we are very close to the Voie Vert which is continually being extended.
  • Tea and coffee trays are in all our rooms with Pukka organic teas and excellent quality coffee together with biscuits and chocolates for when you are peckish.
  • We can help you organise personalised guided tours of the D Day landing beaches.
  • Deauville, where Parisians gather for the summer, is a lively and sophisticated seaside resort.
  • There are strong local links with William the Conqueror at Falaise, Caen and Bayeux.
  • A luxurious self-catering apartment for 2 adults is also available at Chateau La Cour. We offer special rates for stays over 3 weeks. Please let us know your requirements.
