Puylaurens, Tarn

Rooms sleep 2

A treat to stay in this classy conversion of a 17th-century half-timber house in the fine old centre of Puylaurens. A door from the street leads via a paved, covered walkway to the lawned garden. All is serene. Young English/Brazilian hosts welcome you to cleverly modernised rooms – one per floor. Exposed stonework, ancient tiles, an iron bedstead; good lighting, sprung mattresses, white cotton bed linen; smart shower rooms. The dining and sitting room below have polished wooden floors, off-white paintwork and bright colours in contemporary furnishings. Breakfast well here at one handsome table, or in the courtyard.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Amanda Fitzpatrick-Nash

  • Puylaurens is surrounded by breathtaking views. Olinda looks out toward rolling patchwork of pink garlic fields and the Black Mountains of the Massif Central. Walking around the village, the snowcapped Pyrenees appear to float above the Lauragais plains.
  • Visit the UNESCO heritage sites of Albi’s cathedral and the Canal du Midi, climb the 12th-century ramparts of Carcassonne. Enjoy the views from Cordes sur Ciel and Montségur, or travel deep into time in the Grotte de Limousis.
  • Stroll through the markets of Puylaurens, Revel and Castres, taste local produce, join a glass of wine or pastis in the village cafés. Perrier’s award-winning patisserie, where your fresh morning croissant come from, offer irresistible French delicacies.
  • Visit some of the oldest vineyards in France, in the shadow of crusader castles. Wine lovers can taste the Gaillac region’s superb range of affordable varieties as well as those of the Cabardès, Malapère, Minervois and Corbières vineyards to the south.
  • From quiet country roads to the Canal du Midi or rugged logging tracks, this is great cycling country and the Tour de France is a regular visitor. For challenging climbs, hit the ‘black runs’ of Laurent Jalabert. We offer secure storage for your bikes.
  • All sorts of beautiful, signposted walking trails start in Puylaurens. For the hot summer days, the nearby Black Mountains are full of beautiful lakes such as Saint-Ferréol and Montagnès, both with lifeguards, restaurants and lots of fun activities.
