The
Experience

Tucked between two houses in a medieval village is your stone gite. The young, energetic owners have restored it with much imagination and style, so you walk into a kitchen/diner where functional Ikea units are lifted by proper wood surfaces, reclaimed grey and white tiles, a fabulous island for chopping and slicing and a big dining table for convivial meals. Up a level is the gracious living room with beams, chunky sofas, red armchairs and a fireplace. The bedrooms fan out across all three floors: one on the ground floor, one on the first floor with a separate bathroom and two on the second floor share a bathroom. They’re all individual and filled with quirky finds: beautiful wallpaper, an antique kilim, old windows made into cupboard doors; and the bathrooms are spacious and spoiling with more interesting stuff like the smelting pot turned into a basin. Outside there’s an expanse of lawn, barrels spilling over with flowers, pool, terrace and a tree house that will keep little ones busy. A river runs through the hamlet; you’re close to castles, cathedrals and the biggest cloisters in France – heaven for culture vultures.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Eustacia Dene

  • One of the main things I miss about living in Salles are the fabulous walks , along the river and through the woods spotting pine martins and wild orchids.
  • The market in Cordes sur Ciel on a saturday morning mixes local produce with relaxed people watching and medieval architecture.
  • The pretty , sleepy village of Monesties is a lovely place to spend an afternoon. Here you will find the Mise en Tombeau a rare group of 15century sculptures depicting the passion of Christ. Also in Monesties is the Yves Brayer art gallery.
  • Anyone staying in Salles couldn't miss visiting Albi. This pretty and accessible City boasts an enormous Cathedral , beautiful old town and the Toulouse Lautrec museum.
  • If you fancy a change from the pool , there are many great wild swimming spots only a short distance from us, in the Aveyron the Viaur and the lac de roucarie.
  • Don't forget to ask me about any Fetes or Vide Greniers that might be going on during your stay. You wouldn't want to miss an Occitane ball or some interesting brocante!
