On the edge of an ancient little town is a handsome 1800s house (former home to generations of lawyers) and its renovated coach house – attached but utterly private. Not only do you get your own small courtyard for barbecues, you also have access (just around the corner) to the garden of the friendly young Anglo-German owners, whose play areas and swimming pool you are welcome to share. Your coach house has been superbly modernised, with sanded beams and fresh white walls, and immaculate floors in pale limestone and light oak. The sitting room covers the entire ground floor. Up a curved wooden staircase are the kitchen/dining room, and pretty views over small houses to fields and far-off hills. Up again… to inviting bedrooms under low sloping ceilings and a snazzy, state-of-the-art bathroom. Furnishings are uncluttered (dark leather sofas, light oak tables, few fabrics), there are books, games and satellite TV and a generous welcome basket that includes wine and home eggs. Don’t miss the 8th-century abbey at Moissac or the town – history-rich and five miles away.
