The Experience

This restored barn is very spacious and the grounds excel – five acres with a swimming pool, a poplar plantation and your very own lake. Sarah and her family live across the courtyard with their two well-behaved dogs but like to give their guests lots of privacy.

A welcome hamper has wine, snacks and dog treats – your pets are very welcome. The kitchen is a pleasing blend of old and new and has space for two to cook at a time; the living room has board games, books and a useful information pack. Sit out on the cobbled terrace that runs the length of the barn or in the summer kitchen, which has a barbecue and drinks cooler.

Stroll into Cazals for a decent auberge, a bakery, a butcher and a bustling Sunday market that draws in locals. Medieval Sarlat is a 40-minute drive and there are castles galore to explore.

It's very special to enjoy complete privacy and wonderful surroundings in such close proximity to a bustling village - the very best of both worlds. La Grange du Lac offers good accommodation in a beautiful, generous setting. Your hosts offer lots of written information but are very discreet. I'm reasonably sure most guests fall in love with Winnie and Shelby, both beautifully behaved small dogs.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is set a few hundred metres outside Cazals and is in a shallow valley with woodland, fields and roads lined with plane trees. For larger towns, try Gourdon (30 minutes’ drive), a lovely hilltop bastide surrounded by rings of modern development, or to the south, Prayssac with its church and wonderful market (voted the Lot's best in 2019). Sarah recommends Gouffre de Padirac, a fascinating network of underground caves with a lake, and Rocamadour, a medieval town hewn out of rock.

Sarah Barnes

Sarah and John live in the farmhouse with their son and two Jack Russells. They originally lived in Chamonix but moved south for sunshine, the simpler life and the good food. Sarah is a great host, solicitous and welcoming and keen to ensure your stay is perfect.
