The Experience

Greenery scampers up the walls of the three-storey stone house with its pretty dovecote. Terraced gardens and woodland encircle it: figs and plums, a duck pond, fragrant rosemary and mint. You can dip in the large pool, laze under a parasol, and barbecue under a honeysuckle-strewn canopy – don’t worry about breaking the silence, your only neighbours are deer. Light and airy with splashes of Provençal blue, the shabby-chic living area has a ceramic wood stove to snuggle by, angled lamps, and a gramophone and film projector in place of a TV. You can knock up a feast in the oak-lined kitchen and dine together on one of several terraces. Candles and monogrammed linen add a creative touch to the two simple bedrooms, and there’s space to squeeze more in with two single beds; one in a bedroom, the other on the landing. The hilltop village of Najac and its castle, lit up spectacularly at night, is a 30-minute stroll. The river Aveyron offers swimming, fishing and canoeing, and there are VTT routes and horse-riding nearby. A creative spot to enjoy solitude and silence – or simple fun with family and friends.

Reviews

Thoroughly relaxing sitting watching the view change with the light. Delightful position amongst the trees and hills. This meant the weather cooled beautifully in the early autumn evening! Completely private but within walking/cycling distance of the charming village of Najac.

Just spent another wonderful week at this glorious property 3 years after our first stay, and it was a most welcome return. All the familiar delights of this well appointed house in its beautiful, well tended but natural grounds-the same lush greenery and bastide town of Najac with its majestic castle as the scenic backdrop. The delights of the Aveyron delivered again. A simply stunning and super-peaceful place.

We loved Le Pigeonnier – a fairytale cottage, deep in the woods near the storybook village of Najac. Inside, the house is beautifully furnished, clean and well-equipped. Outside, there's a fine terrace with a bbq, a lovely big pool amid the serenity of the woods with a splendid view across the valley to the old castle. The base de pleine nature is a short walk/drive away, with treetop clambering, paddle-boarding and assorted other business for kids and for adults there's everything you'd expect from this beautiful unspoilt corner of France – most notably the Gaillac wines...

What a fabulous place! The perfect location to relax in the heat of the Aveyron summer. Feet dangling in the pool reading a book or ambling down to the river to paddleboard, canoe or watch the kingfishers fly by while swimming under the 13th Century Pont de Saint Blaise. Najac, just up the hill, is a fascinating medieval village with the castle and some eclectic shops and a food market every Wednesday evening that has to be tasted to be believed. The house itself is secluded, spacious, tasteful and very comfortable with a kitchen that's a pleasure to cook in. I can't wait to go back.

We had a wonderful holiday at this property. The house is very secluded and stands in a pristine woodland setting with an extraordinary view of the castle at Najac. It has been very tastefully renovated and it has a luxuriously large pool. This is a peaceful part of rural France, full of good places to walk and rivers to swim in. There are several small towns and villages nearby that are well worth visiting. For city life, Albi and Toulouse are within driving distance. If you want to relax surrounded by natural beauty and picturesque views then this is an excellent choice.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at this wonderful property. The house is absolutely beautiful, well equipped and has everything you need for a long stay. The pool is excellent and the outside space: terraces, gardens and pond are fantastic to explore. The surrounding area is a nature-lover's dream, and the village of Najac with its ancient castle and buildings is historically significant. We would love to return.

Wonderful coverted piegonnaire in idyllic surroundings overlooking a river in Aveyron. The house itself has been very tastefully converted with wooden floors throughout (other than the kitchen) and simple but evocative furniture. Good sized kitchen for cooking and a pull down screen for watching movies, which is a nice touch (with lots of DVDs on hand). The outside terrace is big and comfortable for lounging on with views of the nearby village and its castle. a big pool completes the package. A perfect getaway with bags of charm.

Incredibly relaxing setting in the woods, a stones throw from a picturesque village. Comfortable accommodation, great pool and well organised owner. This was our second visit and would recommend for those who really need to recharge their batteries.

Local points of interest from Gill Higgins

  • Leave tranquility behind and head up to Najac's authentic Sunday morning market for coffee in the "Bar de la Plage" which stays open all year round.
  • Walk down from Le Pigeonnier to the 13th century bridge "Pont St Blaise" on the Aveyron river and swim, picnic, fish or kayak to your heart's content.
  • The view of Najac's castle from Le Pigeonnier should be enough to entice you to visit this remarkable 12th century monument complete with stunning views of the village and surrounding gorges. The climb is worth it!
  • Drive to the medieval town of St Antonin Noble Val with its beautiful squares and Sunday market. Heading on to Bruniquel and Penne, take "Route de la Corniche" on your left and experience the delights of the restaurant "La Corniche" , booking essential.
  • Drive 25 mins to the bastide town of Cordes-sur-Ciel - a well preserved medieval town with dozens of narrow streets to explore. With a buzzing Saturday morning market, it is one of the most remarkable hill top towns in France.
  • Head to the thriving market town of Villefranche de Rouergue - a 20 minute drive. The market is popular with tourists and locals and is held every Thursday morning.
