The Experience

This château was built in 1698 for one of Napoleon’s generals and the two paintings that hang in the Louis XVI salon were gifts from the Emperor. The house has been in David’s family for nearly a century and he’s a genuinely charming and welcoming host.

Enjoy the peace and quiet lazing on the terrace or in the library, or perhaps a game of billiards – or pull on your hiking boots and follow your nose through the woods and round the ponds. Stay in for splendid candlelit dinners in the majestic dining room in the company of your host.

Cycling and walking holidays can begin here, and David is happy to supply maps and suggestions. You can drive to Dieuze for shops and restaurants in ten minutes; Nancy, Strasbourg and Metz are within an hour’s drive.

Reviews

We had a memorable couple of nights at Chateau dAlteville, receiving a very warm welcome from our host and enjoying sociable evenings chatting to other guests over first aperitifs and then supper. It felt more ‘French country house party’ than B&B and we loved every minute of it - definitely very special.

We spent four nights at this beautiful chateau and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our charming host David made us most welcome, the property is very comfortable and restful, there is a lovely lake with plenty of bird life also lots to do and see in this beautiful rural area of France.

Debi, Melbourne

Wow David was a fabulous host his chateau is brimming with character and we had a lovely nights stay. We are so pleased we booked the evening meal too it was great and the setting is lovely.

This is a really memorable place to stay. Beautiful setting, a chateau steeped in history and an owner David who is charming and goes out of his way to make his guests feel welcome, relaxed and special. We stayed three nights, took bikes and cycled around the villages, watched the storks and in the evenings ate with David and the other guests around their large dining table. Would definitely recommend.

Sue

Fascinating castle, wonderful accommodation, lively and attentive hosts. Great for staying with families as there is a big garden, and the children can go to bed while the grown ups enjoy dinner downstairs. Lovely breakfasts. Ask for a tour - there's a lot of history here. Would love to stay again.

Charlotte

Our ground floor bedroom was beautiful. We shared a delightful wild boar dinner with David, four South Africans, two Germans and two Dutch. It was hilarious and great company. DAVID AND THE TWO DAUGHTERS WERE EXCELLENT HOST AND HOSTESSES

Introducing

David Barthélémy

David, the owner, took over the bed and breakfast business from his parents when they retired, and they still live on the property. The family have owned the château for over a century.
