The
Experience

Within exploring distance of Strasbourg, Nancy and Metz, the château has more than a whiff of history. It was built for one of Napoleon’s generals and the two paintings that hang in the Louis XVI salon were gifts from the Emperor. David’s family has farmed here for five generations; now he welcomes guests with huge kindness and eco-awareness. Bedrooms are authentically French and solidly traditional, with carved armoires, Voltaire armchairs, perhaps a draped bedhead or a small chandelier. Parkland views float in through the windows and bathrooms have been updated. Downstairs is more stylish: a library/billiard room, a many-windowed salon hung with portraits, a majestic dining room where splendid candlelit dinners are served several nights a week in the company of your lively, charming host (book ahead). The grounds are beautifully landscaped; enjoy the peace and quiet lazing on the terrace – or pull on your hiking boots and follow your nose through the woods and round the ponds. Tranquil, romantic and definitely special.

Reviews

We had a memorable couple of nights at Chateau dAlteville, receiving a very warm welcome from our host and enjoying sociable evenings chatting to other guests over first aperitifs and then supper. It felt more ‘French country house party’ than B&B and we loved every minute of it - definitely very special.

We spent four nights at this beautiful chateau and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our charming host David made us most welcome, the property is very comfortable and restful, there is a lovely lake with plenty of bird life also lots to do and see in this beautiful rural area of France.

This is a really memorable place to stay. Beautiful setting, a chateau steeped in history and an owner David who is charming and goes out of his way to make his guests feel welcome, relaxed and special. We stayed three nights, took bikes and cycled around the villages, watched the storks and in the evenings ate with David and the other guests around their large dining table. Would definitely recommend.

Sue

Fascinating castle, wonderful accommodation, lively and attentive hosts. Great for staying with families as there is a big garden, and the children can go to bed while the grown ups enjoy dinner downstairs. Lovely breakfasts. Ask for a tour - there's a lot of history here. Would love to stay again.

Charlotte

Our ground floor bedroom was beautiful. We shared a delightful wild boar dinner with David, four South Africans, two Germans and two Dutch. It was hilarious and great company. DAVID AND THE TWO DAUGHTERS WERE EXCELLENT HOST AND HOSTESSES
