The
Experience

This pretty 17th-century house has been welcoming guests for most of its history: it was once the Auberge de la Gare; the station has gone but a train occasionally shoots through the sleepy calm. Kathy, from Ohio, and Martin, from Wiltshire, are great fun and will make you feel instantly at home. Each of the sunny little bedrooms has a charm and flavour of its own and the big heavy-beamed living room opens onto an enclosed garden with a well-hidden above-ground pool. Beautiful meals are served in the elegant dining room or out under the trees. Kathy loves cooking and Martin grows the vegetables. It’s all absurdly good value.

Fantastic dog friendly, wonderful home cooked food, great hospitality, extremely friendly and helpful, great rooms

Dawn, Birmingham

We adored it on arrival, really welcoming hosts, beautiful house, fantastic garden for the children, we were at home in an instant. Really wonderful, we will be back next year.

What a wonderful stay we had with Martin and Kathy in their beautiful home. We arrived hot and thirsty after a long drive to be welcomed with a cold beer in their lovely garden. The rooms were superb - we had the Manor Suite complete with four poster bed! A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had with Martin and Kathy and our fellow guests - in fact we all felt like old friends. Kathy's cooking is first class and both are very attentive hosts. We can't wait to return (to try Kathy's famous chicken pie!) and take our family with us. We were sorry to move on and would loved to have stayed longer

Only one night at Le Canard but the most delightful night of a great 3 weeks travelling, eating and drinking good wines through Central and southern France. The rooms- spacious and comfortable; the gardens - a great place to relax. Most of all the hospitality and guest focused service was superb. Conversation and laughter circulated around the dinner table of mixed nationalities and ages, all the time lubricated by Kathy and Martin's warm humour and delicious food and wine. A great place to stay and look forward to staying again when next we travel to France. Australia 28/08/2012

Absolutely brilliant stay. Beautiful and very comfortable four poster bed, room for our two little ones and a big garden to play in, a very warm welcome from Martin and Kathy (the nicest people), a delicious meal under the gazebo in the garden with three interesting couples (a highlight of our trip) with our hosts cleverly steering conversation, and our room's little balcony right there so we could eat and be close to the kids. Afterwards, our invoice included a lovely personal message from Kathy. Very highly recommend!

We have stayed here many times and in 25 years of holidaying in France it is the only place we have ever returned to. We will continue to do so as long as Martin and Kathy will allow us! The consummate hosts and a wonderfully homely environment. Communal dinners and breakfasts are fantastic; the food the conversation and the conviviality. Martin and Kathy have an infectious enthusiasm for what they do and it shows.

A wonderful warm welcome from Kathy and Martin after a long haul drive from Provence. Cheery and lovely Martin ensured that glasses were always filled, and lovely Kathy served up the most delightful dinner, the other guests were great and fun company. We loved the atmosphere and ambience of this wonderful rustic house. Great location for travelling down to the south. We look forward to a return visit. B Poole, Dorset

I would say that " Thumbs Up " doesn't quite describe La Canard...accurately! Superlative is ...better! We spent 5 days there for the first time. Will definitely return. Martin and Kathy are tremendous hosts and the Food is excellent! Kathy is quite the Chef! The rooms are charming and homey. My wife and I ....really enjoyed this visit.

Rory, Smyrna

We stopped off here overnight on our way further south and found it to be everything Sawdays told us. Wonderful welcome from lovely people (and dog), very comfortable, friendly, delicious food ... They were also very tolerant of our exuberant young dog (who also loved his stay). Almost couldn't wait to get back there on our return journey from holiday. Will definitely go again

This was our second stay at this lovely B&B run by Martin and Kathy. who go the extra mile to provide exceptional customer service to their guests. After a long drive, it was great to relax in the delightful gardens having a picnic drinking wine and listening to the birdsong - and Martin's stories! We can recommend bedroom number three, which is a spacious room with a very comfortable four poster bed. Highly recommended. We will definitely return.

David

We visited here using Sawday's French B&B......loved the name!! What a find ...Martin and Kathy are the most delightful people - friendly, welcoming...There are not enough superlatives to describe this beautiful spot. We have been visiting for 3 years on our way up and down to the Dordogne/Lot. Couldn't think of staying anywhere else. They deserve all the awards they receive 100%.

Patricia

We have used Alastair Sawday's throughout Europe over the years. We have enjoyed staying at all of them almost without exception but the one that we have found supreme is Le Canard au Parapluie Rouge run by Kathy and Martin in Celon, France. The bedrooms are charming and spotlessly clean as is the rest of the house. The meals are always superb and the hosts are so friendly and kind. During the evening meal we have met interesting people from all over the world and Kathy and Martin make sure that everyone enjoys the occasion. The interesting old house and gardens make it an ideal place to stay.

Daphne

This was our second visit to Le Canard and we are planning our third! That says it all. It is a beautiful farmhouse where the owners Martin and Kathy go above and beyond to welcome you into their home. The rooms are clean, spacious and attractive and the evening meal is a must as Kathy is an excellent cook and gives travellers the opportunity to meet and share experiences.

Maureen

The location is perfect for travelers en route to the SW from Paris or CDG airport. Charming and helpful hosts, Kathy & Martin welcome you warmly to their lovely house on quiet beautiful grounds. The rooms are comfortable and carefully decorated. We had a good sleep before joining other guests for drinks in the garden and then a most delicious dinner prepared by Kathy. It was a big plus to be able to remain on such lovely grounds in the evening so we did not have to drive. We certainly would like to return! The Hanna’s USA

Linda

Simply the best! Kathy and Martin are fabulous hosts, nothing is too much trouble, meals and drinks are excellent, the accommodation is cosy and comfortable. Kathy and Martin are able to create a convivial atmosphere, thereby enabling guests of all nationalities to enjoy their stay. A great place to stay.

Peter

We broke our drive through France with a night at Martin and Cathy's wonderful and welcoming home. Cathy is a great cook and both are delightful dinner companions. Even the dogs got on! Highly recommended and we will be visiting again on our next trip through France.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Martin & Kathy Missen

  • Our area is a real treasure of medieval villages, sites of historical significance, forests, lakes and a bountiful selection of walks- all waiting to be appreciated as this is a relatively undiscovered rural part of Central France.
  • If you are keen walkers like ourselves, then this is the spot for you! We discovered an amazing array of hikes in our area. Anything from a casual stroll starting at our doorstep, to more serious hikes ranging from a few kilometres to 30+km.
  • Walking, a perfect opportunity to discover the landscape, most likely you will only encounter wildlife of the 4-legged kind. There is a huge variety of birdlife, some right in our garden or 15km, The Brenne Nature park, offering lakes & tucked away hides
  • The surrounding villages are stunning. If you only have 1 day, we have the perfect driving tour, which will give you a great sampling of our region. Some of the suggested spots would be Argenton-sur-Creuse, Gargilesse, Eguzon and Crozant
  • Further afield, Oradour sur Glane, a village destroyed during WWII. There is a well-presented museum & the opportunity for a quiet reflective walk through the village, which has been preserved as it was left that tragic day in history.
  • For relaxing-Montcocu. Gorgeous peaceful spot along the river, perfect lazy afternoon. Should you not wish to venture out, our spacious garden is the answer. Plenty of spots for a snooze or a dip in our plunge pool. Winter months, a good book by the fire!
