La Loge

Aize, Indre

The rose-covered porch opens to a house of warmth, comfort and old-fashioned charm: wine on the table, logs in the grate, books, games…

Down a quiet lane (three cars a day), in the green and gentle Upper Loire, is an adorable stone farmhouse, a peaceful place for Loire-lovers to stay. You can see wildlife in the Brenne Natural Park, tour wineries, browse brocantes, lap up the chateaux of Chenonceau, Chambord, Valençay. And, come evening, from the comfy sofa on the mezzanine upstairs, spot deer trot out of the woods and head for the field beyond. As for the house, it has a nice, beamy, friendly feel, with two feather-cushioned sofas, a lovely cabinet of Quimper porcelain, an antique dining table, and, off the very well-equipped kitchen, a shower room and a private bedroom, ideal for teenagers or the less than nimble. An open-tread stair leads to two further rooms under the eaves, cosy with toile de Jouy bedcovers, excellent mattresses, soft carpets and, in the larger one (the en suite), a curvaceous French bed. Back downstairs, French windows open to grass, willows and roses, and sweet spots for shade. All this, and the village of Aizé – with its one (good) restaurant – a 20-minute walk.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Sylvia Menzies-Armstrong

  • The Chateau de Valencay is full of interesting things to do and see, from a maize to the wonderful grounds. In summer months they hold events in the evening and light the chateau with candles and the staff dress in 17th century costume . A French delight
  • Gracay , is a must. The locals decided to spice it up and have painted fun signs such as this way out for elephants, sound silly but it's fun It also has a famous indoor Brocante where you can find anything from old linen to precious Limoge china
  • The best white wine in France is here in the Loire!! You can take a local wine tour and buy from the vignorole who will be delighted to explain the process ,the price is good. Or you can meander to Sancerre passing through some of the better know vinyards
  • Bourge once the capital of France is 40 minutes drive away. It's a MUST to visit, full of character and great restaurants and a spectacular cathedral with wonderful stained glass windows. The Son et Lumiere is the best that I have ever seen in France.
  • You can eat as the locals eat for 13 Euros for a 3 course lunch. Or there are a number of local restaurants that serve wonderful food that you would be hard pressed to find in Paris.Using local ingredients they offer both excellence and great value
  • Bouge le Chateau, is a miniature version of theTrianon housing a wanderful collection of furniture and carriages, the grounds are spectacular. Opposite the chateau is an auberge where on weekdays you can eat like the locals and at weekends like a king
