The Experience

Imagine summer breakfasts at pretty tables in the garden: a generous buffet of fruit salads, croissants, homemade jams, and a fresh cake every day. The stresses of city living fall away at this elegant country house, with only vineyards and fields to surround you, and Chinon 5km away.

Inside are bookcases, a baby grand, and huge, light, airy bedrooms. One is in the old wine pressoir, another’s on the first floor, and two with beamed ceilings, are on the second floor. ‘Le Fruitier’, perfect for a small family, has independent access from the garden. Relax in deckchairs in the grassed courtyard, swim in the saltwater pool on the upper lawn.

After a day’s discovering the many nearby châteaux, such as Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau, comes another treat: dinner with your fellow guests at the candlelit table, where Martine’s traditional dishes are accompanied by wines from the winery up the road. Be sure to ask her about local tastings!

Reviews

A very nicely converted old farm with a large central yard surrounded by buildings and grassy area at rear with swimming pool. A delightful place to eat, sit and read or stroll. Dinner is served at a communal table, out of doors under a large lime tree if weather permits. Food and wine excellent, and the other guests the night we were there were good company. Host friendly and helpful. We should love to go back.

Nick and Caroline, Winchester

A traditional French B&B in a fine old stone house and a chatty globetrotting music-loving owner who loves her guests. This is a wonderful base for discovering the Loire valley.

Nicky, Sawday's Inspector

We stayed for one night en route to our return ferry, but wished that we’d been able to stay longer. Martine is a very welcoming host, who provided a very good evening meal for her guests that evening - with good French/English conversation. Our bedrooms were impressive conversions of the former attic space. Breakfast was impressive with fruit, cereals, homemade preserves, fresh croissants, etc. Overall this is a really comfortable place to stay and use as a base to explore the western/central Loire Valley.

Mike, Emsworth

Le Clos de Ligre is a very pretty house set in a very large courtyard with numerous other attractive buildings. Martine is very welcoming and took trouble to cater for the gluten-free dietary requirements of two of my family, which was much appreciated. Our rooms on the top floor were huge, airy and light, with attractive views over the garden and beyond. The baths are situated in the bedrooms themselves. A kettle is provided which is a nice touch. Beds were very comfortable. The swimming pool area is well supplied with pool loungers and Martine thoughtfully provides pool towels. Thank you!

Dawn, Poole

We stayed here for 2 nights in September. Martine is a wonderful host, very attentive and presented us with lovely dinners (with wine) and breakfast. The house is delightful and in such a great location. Really quiet, only heard the owls during the night. Lovely spacious bedroom and bathroom. Didn't get to use the swimming pool as the weather had a turned a bit wet.

Alexandra, Lymington

Delightful old manor farm, we had rooms in the old house which were big and spacious although some may prefer their bath in a separate room! Martine is a lovely host and was very kind to my elderly father, and, although she speaks English, was very happy to allow me to practise my French with her. The dinner was nicely prepared and included produce from her garden. All in all a very peaceful and relaxing stay.

Carol

We were totally overcome by the beauty and tranquillity of this beautiful property! Martine is a wonderful host and did everything to create a special, romantic and enjoyable ambience. We will return regularly! Thank you Martine!

Introducing

Martine Descamps

Martine, generous and welcoming, ran her own PR and Communications agency in Paris for many years before she turned her manor farmhouse and cottage into a flourishing B&B and gite. She is well-travelled, speaks good English, loves Chinon wines, and enjoys meeting guests. She also loves classical music, supports young musicians and holds concerts in her garden.
