The Experience

This grand house, once home to a former bishop and riddled with history, is a short stroll from the glorious cathedral. Each space has its own kitchenette for light cooking, either neatly tucked into the cupboards or in a separate living area. L’Evêché is in the original chapel, with a modern four-poster and dramatic stripes, Bleu de Chartres and Le Jardin overlook the garden, Monseigneur Fleury is gorgeously subtle in pinks and greens, Charles V is on the second floor, elegant in dove greys and soft yellows.

They all come with lovely linen, candles, Nespresso machines, iPod docks and scented lotions in the gleaming bathrooms. You are greeted by Valérie or Marthe, you look after yourselves but can choose to have breakfast delivered to your door. The lovely big garden is yours to wander or find a quiet seat and enjoy the roses.

Find shops and cafés, hire bikes or see the sights on foot. There are plenty of guided tours you can join to learn more about medieval architecture including the cathedral.

Reviews

Everything about Maison Ailleurs is beautiful, comfortable and perfectly thought through. The hosts are friendly, helpful and make you feel very welcome. Chartres is a gorgeous city to explore (the history, architecture and cuisine) and the Maison is a magical and atmospheric base from which to do this.

The perfect B&B. Apart from it being a convenient stopover driving from Calais to the Lot (with private parking), everything about Maison Ailleurs exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the Bishop's room, which has the most wonderful WOW factor with its dramatic decor. Valérie, friendly and attentive without being intrusive, has oodles of style, which shows in the way she has masterminded the refurbishment of the whole building. Her breakfast was nothing short of exquisite. Highlights were the homemade brioche, yogurt and granola, plus the best scrambled eggs ever. Bravo Valérie!

Jeni, London

Maison Ailleurs is an unforgettable historic building with first rate accommodation. Valerie is a charming and gracious hostess who ensures that you have everything you need, including booking our restaurant for dinner and ensuring that we had everything we needed for breakfast. The location is ideal with a 5 min walk to Chartres Cathedral and the city centre with it's restaurants etc. We plan to visit again.

We have had some incredible breaks staying in places shown on your website. Its a great source of correct information and never disappoints. We have had the pleasure this week of staying in Maison Ailleurs and found it just perfect. Valerie is the consummate Hostess and is utterly charming.

Janice

The most perfect suite/apartment. Stunning property in the centre of Chartres. Nothing is too much for Valerie., the owner. Beautifully presented breakfast, delivered to your room. Comfortable 6' bed. Perfect stay in wonderful surroundings. Highly recommended., it was hard to leave.

Janice

After a quick swing through southern France, staying in four different Sawday's BnB's, we ended our trip with a night at Maison Ailleurs in Chartres. Although each BnB was wonderful in its own way, Maison Ailleurs ended up as our favorite. The combination of style (the brilliant Bishop's Room) and service (the delicious breakfast brought to our room) was unbeatable. There was space for our car, an easy walk into the heart of the old city and a quiet night's sleep at Maison Ailleurs. All around perfection.

Location

The neighbourhood

The cathedral could take you a day. Its 12th and 13th-century stained glass windows and sculptures intact and with the widest nave in France, it's a fabulous example of the new Gothic architecture. There are concerts and classical music events throughout the year. Nearby châteaux include Villebon, home to Marcel Proust and Château de Maintenon. The city has some superb restaurants but book ahead.
