The
Experience

Lisa and Duncan from England have embraced life in southern La Souterraine. She is the least ruffled, most contented of chefs; he serves wines with finesse; both love house, children, guests, and their secret garden with hens. Now, at last, the renovation of the former residence of the Marquis de Valady is complete. So much to enjoy: the fine proportions, the sweeping balustrade, the antique mirrors, the crystal-drop chandeliers, the pale walls, the glowing parquet… and superb breakfasts and dinners. If Lisa pops a hot water bottle into your bed it will be encased in white linen: the hospitality here is exceptional.

Reviews

Duncan and Lisa have made this wonderful old house into a delight for the senses. Our room was beautiful, fabulous pillows and linen, gorgeous bathroom. Lisa is an outstanding cook and as a couple they couldn't have been more charming and welcoming. Fantastic place! We are fellow Sawday's owners and understand the love and effort put into everything they have done.

A massive thumbs up for this gem. A truly 'special place to stay' with so many beautiful touches, delicious dinner and a really warm welcome by Duncan and Lisa. The perfect location for a really memorable overnight stop within minutes from the A20. The house has been so stunningly and lovingly restored with beautiful antique and vintage finds collected by the owners. The first time I've slept in antique linen sheets. Delightful.

Wonderful hospitality, glass of wine before dinner, lovely company, generous hosts. Extremely helpful in many areas- helped make a stay in an unknown area so easy. Very close to town, markets and brilliant coffee shop in the sun. You must stay if in the area as they are just soooo helpful. The house is so charming, cosy and you feel at home.

Staying at Maison Numero Neuf en route to the South of France was a real treat and a great way to break the journey. It is a beautifully and sympathetically restored house with very "Country Living" type decor, and lovingly restored French furniture. There were some memorable and luxurious touches such as the top quality linen and towels, Occitane toiletries, fresh flowers in the bedrooms etc. The evening meal in the garden was very good but the breakfast was the real highlight with scrumptious home made granola and local yoghurt, fruit, croissants and bread. A "cut above" in every way!

Wonderful one-night stay en route to our holiday destination in the Dordogne. Would warmly recommend Numero Neuf for its great charm, comfort and thoroughly lovely welcome. Superb meal and great fun to eat en famille with the other guests. Would certainly return if we are making a similar journey again. Great to meet you, Duncan & Lisa - your hospitality was a real treat.

This was the third time we had used Sawday's Special Places to find somewhere to stay whilst travelling in France. As before our stay lived up to and in this case exceeded expectations. The hospitality, accomodation and cuisine were all superb. It is clear that Duncan & Lisa have a particular talent for looking after their guests even down to the detaail of slipping hot water bottles into our bed whilst we enjoyed a wonderful evening meal. Now that we have found this gem we will be staying again in March when we return to France.

This was our second stay in the matter of a week. Travelling to and from our holiday. Fantastic rooms, food and a very warm welcome(especially for our dog. Water and dog biscuits in the bedroom. What a lovely thought! ). Will definitely return. Thank you. Paul, Fiona and henry

Maison Numero Neuf is a lovely house, beautifully renovated by Duncan and Lisa. Very hospitable hosts, dinner was excellent.

Heather, Chepstow

Duncan and Lisa were incredible hosts. Their home is gorgeous and full of charm and peacefulness. They are always available for all your needs and with a genuine smile on their face. We loved staying at their beautiful home which was quiet and full of charming antiques. We felt so rested and well fed after. We will definitely be returning.

Having spent two weeks in France in various types of accomodation we arrived to a little slice of heaven, Maison Numero Neuf comes highly recommended. The welcome by Duncan and Lisa was wonderful. They have a beautiful home which was immaculate, from the crisp bed linen to the Occitane soaps in the bath room. The rooms were decorated beautifully with gorgeous French Beds and stylish furniture. We loved the three course meal on the terrace, especailly as Duncan and Lisa's children served us with big warm smiles. I would urge anyone who is going through France to stay, if only we had more hol.

Emma

Fabulous home in the centre of town but with just the sound of church bells to disturb you. Furnishings', beds, linens attention to detail faultless. The food is first rate, Lisa is a great cook, and Duncan an excellent front of house, with a formidable knowledge of fine wine. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Maison Número Neuf for one night on our way farther south. Lisa and Duncan took our booking just 24 hours in advance and had a delicious supper waiting for us on our arrival - meringues using fresh eggs from their chickens! Creuse is a lovely town but the narrow streets made the secure off street parking provided at the house especially convenient - we did not have to unload the car or worry about blocking any roads. The house itself has an interesting history and is decorated in a simple but elegant style. We stayed in Cornforth: great water pressure and lovely views.

We stopped over for a night on our way back to the UK from South of France. Duncan and Lisa were so welcoming, the bedrooms were beautifully presented and immaculately clean and the breakfast was so yummy the next day I had to ask for the recipe for the granola! Would highly recommend and would definitely stay there again.

We stayed for 2 nights on our way back from the Languedoc. We were very warmly greeted and shown to a lovely, comfortable & spotless room. Evening meals were fabulous. Unsurprisingly, it was busy both nights, so we also had interesting evenings in the company of fellow travellers. Overall, great hospitality, welcome and food in a beautifully stylish and comfortable house.

Sharon

We were recommended to stay at Maison 9 on our way back to Calais and everything exceeded our expectations. A very warm welcome from Duncan & Lisa, a beautiful room (with antique linen on the bed) and fantastic food beautifully presented. We dined to the background sound of classical music played by their children, Ollie (guitar) and Hattie (piano) – delightful and most memorable! Looking forward to going back. It was a perfect end to our holiday, which we highly recommend.

My comments following a recent stay at this wonderful Chambres d'hote in beautiful La Souterraine. The building is impressive from the outside and very attractively decorated inside (bedrooms and ground floor reception rooms). My bedroom was very comfortable. There was a very warm welcome from the owners Duncan and Lisa. The evening meal is optional but is delicious and really worth choosing because Lisa is an excellent cook. The hotel is less than 5 minutes walk from the very centre of the town (which is worth visiting). Car parking is available at Maison Numero Neuf.

We have stayed at Maison Neuf on three occasions on our way to and from SW France and our about tomake another reservation. The house is beautifully restored with large comfortable roms with modern shower rooms en suite. Very friendly and welcoming with delicious evening meals provided.

Jean

Our family of four had the pleasure to stay here one night on our way down south. We received a very warm welcome and offered a choice of rooms, all of which were beautiful. Luckily we chose to have an evening meal which was of the highest standard and we left with quite a few of the recipes. Breakfast was delicious too. We would love to come back here.

Pauline

Our perfect rest stop en route to SW France – barely a detour from the autoroute. Quiet street; sunny terrace in summer; blazing log fire in autumn. Rooms restored as an original townhouse should be – ours complete with creaky floorboard. Crisp white bed-linen; thick cotton towels; luxurious bathroom smellies. A warm and unforced welcome, and Lisa’s cuisinerie is at a high professional level. Add in the frisson of unpredictable dinner conversation (from passing pilgrims to fellow holidaymakers). Worth a stroll into the quirky main square of the old town. The church roof timbers defy gravity.

Ewa

Our visit was more like staying with friends than in a Bed & Breakfast. The property has been extremely well renovated and is very comfortable. Extremely attentive hosts and nothing is too much trouble, including afternoon tea for weary explorers and hot water bottles to take the chill of your bed. Duncan's knowledge of the area and French customs means that his guests maximise the benefits of their stay. Lisa's cooking means that Maison numero neuf is frankly the best cuisine in La Souterraine. We will recommend this establishment to friends and family and will return there ourselves.
