On its timeless wooded hill, the red sandstone farm cottage was restored by Tim and Gilly some years ago and has been much appreciated since. Original stones and beams were preserved and terracotta floors and pine cupboards put in; cookery books, strings of garlic and board games add to the laid-back feel. The ancient bread oven, its brick surround charred by the ages, lends a rustic air to the dark old kitchen while the sitting room is easy with cherry-pink sofas and stove. Attic bedrooms, simple and cosily carpeted, have small dormer windows to more-than-pretty views. French windows let you out of the kitchen into an outdoor barbecue area where you can dine and gaze on fields and woods, never-ending hills and glorious hilltop Curemonte. There’s also a super walled-off pool, shared with your delightful British hosts next door, and a vast oak-floored barn that you may use whenever you like: table tennis, billiards, dancing, grand piano; it can be hired for weddings and workshops, too. An unfussy, no-frills home in a lovely setting, for a family in search of peace and space.
