My Secret Cruzy

Cruzy, Hérault

A super-chic gîte on the edge of a sleepy village in the heart of the wine-growing Languedoc - midway between the mountains and the sea

1 bed

1 bedroom

Sleeps 2

Stroll down the wide street into Cruzy for croissants; enjoy breakfast in your courtyard garden. This small cottage is secluded by greenery from the owners maison du vigneron where you are greeted on arrival with an aperitif. Outdoors is as peaceful as within. The kitchen has everything you need and you’ll find a bottle of wine in the fridge, along with milk and sparkling water. Concoct supper with market-fresh produce or join John and Kevin at the big house for dinner during the week: John is a fabulous cook.Pack a lunch for a day trip on the languid Canal du Midi – it passes nearby. This is an interesting part of France to visit, particularly out of season. In spring the roadsides burst with wild flowers, in autumn the vines are magnificent. Walk straight into the hills from the village, or swim in the river of lovely Bize Minervois.

The neighbourhood

Pack a lunch for a daytrip on the Canal du Midi; it passes nearby. There are basic shops in the village as well as weekly fish and charcuterie vendors, and a pizza van. There are walking trails and two restaurants a five-minute drive. Hilltop villages, swimming rivers and wineries abound so stock up with wines to take home. The coast is 30 minutes away, as are the towns of Béziers and Narbonne.

Local points of interest from John Bird

  • Cruzy is surrounded by an impressive terrain, ideal for walking or cycling, direct from the cottage. The famous Canal du Midi is nearby, offering an alternative experience, with the benefit of stopping for refreshments on the way.
  • The stunning Mediterranean coast is within easy reach. Long sandy beaches await you, with the option of adventure on the high seas or simply relaxing by the rippling waves. The climate here means a visit to the seaside is a must at any time of year.
  • Alternatively, explore the surrounding countryside. Try kayacking at Roquebrun or swimming in the River Orb there. Go walking in the Gorges d'Heric or visit the picturesque village of Olargues or the Lac du Salagou or Saint Guilhem le Desert.
  • A bustling traditional market is held every Sunday morning in neighbouring St Chinian. Visit the wine shops there to discover fine examples from the local appellation. Here, you are on your way to the Haut Languedoc Regional National Parc.
  • Thirty minutes by car will take you to Béziers or Narbonne, our nearest towns. Very different from one another, both are steeped in history and well worth a visit. Les Halles and Roman history are highlights, as well as shopping and cafés of course.
  • An hour's drive or so will see you in the memorable towns of Pézenas, Carcassonne or Montpellier. For a special day out ride the Petit Train Jaune from near to Perpignan or venture up into the Pyrénées mountains or even cross into Spain.

John Bird

John, a designer, and Kevin, retired nursing manager, bought this elegant wine-grower's house in 2014 - and the cat that came with it. They have lovingly, and painstakingly, restored it, returning it, and its cottage, to former glory. They like to welcome their guests in person, know the region well and love to share their knowledge.
