La Maison d'OcTon

Octon, Hérault

Siestas and summery meals on the terrace with lake and mountain views – great wine, walking, cycling and water sports – comfortable indoors

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 6

The vibrant village of Octon lies at the edge of the Salagou Lake among red ruffe rocks and vineyards, and it’s here that you’ll find this beautifully renovated, light and comfortable house. It’s right at the entrance to the buzzing village square (with fountain, épicerie and hotel), perfect for people watching from your vine-covered terrace as the sun goes down behind the church. There’s no garden, but you do have another more private terrace for siestas and summer meals, with views to the distant hills. It’s special indoors too; fine red leather sofas in the living room with its original Gard stone fireplace, an upright (and tuned) piano and warm wooden floors and soft grey walls. The kitchen is spotless, with Provençale tiles and everything a real cook might need. Cosy bedrooms in restful colours have parquet and terracotta floors, painted furniture and good beds, and there are two stylish shower rooms and a separate loo downstairs. Visit the farmers’ market in summer, fill your days with walking, cycling and wine-tasting, or make the most of the lake and sail, windsurf and fish.

We stayed at Maison d’ Octon for three months (late Jan- late April). First of all, Laure is a perfect host and then you have the property which was perfect in every way for us. The village was very quiet in Jan but started to liven up in Feb and I am sure it is hopping in summer. The village has a post office, mini-market, library (photocopy etc), 4 vintners, restaurant/bar, hotel/restaurant and church. About 15 kilometers North or South you have towns with markets, gas, etc (Lodeve and Clermont l'Herault). Laure’s property was just perfect. Recommend to anyone.

This is our 2nd visit to La Maison d'OcTon - the Gite is wonderful as is Madame Laure who welcomes you with fresh eggs from her hens, local wine and a taste of some local produce. There is everything you can possibly need. The village is a lovely hub with 3 restaurants, although only the hotel restaurant opens in the week until mid June. Great walks and towns/villages nearby as well as Lac Du Salagou which is a 20 minutes walk away. Loved our time at the Gite once again.

  • Inescapable, the lack of Salagou ! Discover the wonderful magic landscapes of tinted red, green and white. The multicolour water gives the lake a fairy tale appearance. Nature, number of species of animals and plant life live in perfect harmony with man.

  • The “cirque dolomitique de Mourèze”, near Octon is incredible. Offers an exceptional natural landscape of sculpture dolomite rocks. The little village of Mourèze charming, with its roman church and its relics of a castle from the Xth century.
  • The house is certified "vineyards and discoveries" about six wine growers distributed in the village, or you will be welcomed well and can taste good wines of Languedoc.
  • Desire for a small dive in the Mediterranean Sea ?The first beaches are in 45 minutes by car. Montpellier, Le Cap d'Agde, Le Grau du Roi, Vias, Carnon, Palavas ...
