Faugères, Hérault

A hillside retreat - gently unwind, to birdsong and wide mountain views – with a saltwater pool, big open fire and walks from the door

4 beds

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 6

Take the trail to Faugères to see the ancient windmills and to taste exceptional wines; head for the High Languedoc gorges, and for Roquebrun by kayak. Bring home local market produce – goat cheese, sausages, honey – to eat out on the terrace; laze in a hammock; float in the pool as the sun sets. There’s a refreshing simplicity to the whole place, outdoors and in – the cool downstairs double has its own shower room, there’s plenty of bright, comfortable space to lounge around the fire – and that unforgettable view.Come at any time of year – spring is splendid, autumn glorious with vineyards buzzing. And when you feel like taking the ‘self’ out of self-catering it’s a treat to lunch or dine at the Abbaye de Vallemagne; maybe sample seafood from the Lac de Thau.

This is a truly outstanding house and pool in a beautiful and peaceful area. This year was our fourth stay and we have made some good friends of the neighbours near the property who are charming. It is a great location and easily accessible to the seaside, super markets, atmospheric towns and restaurants. Thank you Christina and Vincent Malcolm

Malcolm, Margate, kent

A place to mix peaceful seclusion with proximity to restaurants, vineyards, markets and outdoor activities. The property looks out over a stunning landscape of rolling hills, full of walking / running & cycling / calm mountain bike options. Water activities at Roquebrun and the coast easily accessible. Supermarkets, bars and restaurants a short drive to nearby villages. Pool great and a necessity for hot months.

The neighbourhood

The beautiful Languedoc Parc Naturel is all around, with its vineyards and market towns, its forests, gorges, rivers and lakes – for hiking, kayaking, swimming, fishing. There’s a shop and simple restaurant three kilometers away and it’s five to Bedarieux in the spectacular Orb Valley for more shops and restaurants. You’re a half hour drive to the coast near Beziers and to ancient Pezenas with its Saturday antique market. Faugères wine is exceptional, and you can walk there to taste it.

Local points of interest from Vincent & Christina Thompson

Vincent & Christina Thompson

Christina and Vincent Thompson weren’t really looking for a second home but were so captivated by the area and the stunning view from L’Echalote (originally built as a restaurant) that they took the plunge and have no regrets. Over the years they’ve been coming here as often as they can and are delighted to share their comfortably mellow and family-friendly special place.
