Such a treat to stay in this elegant, mellow house, on three floors: kitchen and sitting room on the first, open stair to bedrooms and bathroom on the second, and a vaulted summer kitchen below. There’s an exquisite courtyard with a water ‘bassin’ where you can potter or lounge with a glass of rosé as sausages sizzle on the grill. The upstairs kitchen is chic and sleek with stone fireplace, long wooden table, beautiful antique chairs, flagged floors. There’s modern art above the big double bed and a fabulous bathroom. Come with others and rent Rue Baratier, the house next door, through the garden gate. It’s equally charming, beamed, terracotta-tiled and on three floors with an open-plan living area, winter-welcome fireplace, peaceful, stylish bedrooms and its own little courtyard too. This is the land of sunshine and dreams: Roman Nimes, medieval Uzes, beaches, sand dunes and the Pont du Gard. As for lovely, unspoilt Calvisson, it has a sprinkling of everything: restaurants, creperies, flower shops, bakeries, and a Sunday market. Delightful.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Jayne Bonard

  • Situated between Nimes and Montpellier, Calvisson is an exceptional site, in the countryside yet close to both mountains and the sea; a village which at the same time displays elements of beauty from its past, yet is still functional.
  • Calvisson has a festive ambiance, its also a relaxing place with amenities to cater for all ages. Within a short walk of the cottage, in the mediaeval heart of the village, there are several cafés, restaurants, a supermarket, a paper shop and 3 bakeries.
  • There's also a butchers, greengrocers, florists, hairdressers and beauty salons. On Sundays visit the delightful market in the main village square. For the more sporty there are tennis courts, an outdoor public swimming pool and cycle hire facilities.
  • Walks around the hills can be 1 hour or 5 hours and walking paths are well defined. The village itself has a variety of attractions amongst which is the Maison de Boutis which has an exhibition of embroidered work by masters of the tradional "boutis".
  • The Caveau (wine cave) produces an excellent AOC Coteaux de Languedoc plus other Pays d'Oc wines. A walk up the hill leads to the site of 'Les Trois Moulins' and reveals uninterrupted, breathtaking views over the plains of the Vaunage.
  • Calvisson is close to the cosmopolitan town of Montpellier, the Roman town of Nimes, and an hour away are such delights as the magnificent, once Papal City of Avignon, the lovely Ducy town of Uzès, the famous Pont de Gard and the celebrated town of Arles.
