The
Experience

Heart-of-Cévennes magic among rocks, rivers and woodland. After a couple of hairpins and a river causeway you meet the strong stone walls and arches and the gentle inner courtyard of the ancient domaine. Dating back to 1197, it stands in a secret valley surrounded by 200 acres of nature and pure air. Nothing has changed over the years other than trees being cleared for more light, a bow window being added for more indoor space, and careful gardening. You will rejoice in the pool, the huge garden, the games room in the old barn, the river for picnics, adventures and cool plunges. Each apartment (La Source was beautifully renovated in 2016) has its own terrace and the whole place is a dream for family gatherings. Attractive, comfortable rooms are just right: not over-smart or vulnerable. There are antique armoires and colourful fabrics, good modern kitchens and open fireplaces. The caretaker grows organic eggs and veg – just ask. You will only hear bird calls, sheep bells – and yourselves. With so many spaces to explore and those fabulous views on the spot, you may never get round to the other beauties of the Cévennes.

Reviews

A beautiful gem of a place in amazing surroundings. Our apartment was lovely with a cute little terrace overlooking the pool which was just so tranquil for breakfast and dinner. The information supplied by the owner Meg was second to none and so very helpful. Lilliane and Bernard who look after the chateau and grounds on site are just truely amazing and made our stay fabulous with their friendliness and hospitality. Bussas is a great place to relax and drink in the amazing scenery. Also great places to explore the beautiful Cevennes . Would highly recommend

Driving down the lane to Bussas is like entering a magical world and leaving the real world behind. We stayed for 2 weeks in Le Four a Pain, a very comfortable, simply furnished apartment slightly separated from the main chateau. The beautiful old chateau is nestled in a bowl of pine and chestnut trees, with wonderful walks from your own front door. The owners thoughtfully provide a detailed list of local walks, most of which we did. The friendly resident caretakers, Bernard and Liliane, were always on hand with help and advice.

We have visited several times and for our 50th we rented the whole Chateau and had an incredible time with family and friends. There something for everyone. For me, my heaven is to wake early and watch the sun wake up the valley and stay up late to glimpse the shooting stars. Others like the adventure pursuits just a stones throw away. I could go on and on. It’s a special place. We shall be returning.

This is a wonderful place. Hidden in a beautiful valley, it is for those seeking peace and quiet in comfortable surroundings. We stayed in two of the apartments during our two week stay. Both were charming, comfortable and well equipped. The caretakerz Lilianne and Bernard are helpful and friendly without being intrusive. This a special place, especially for walkers and wildlife lovers, but also for those just wanting to relax and soak up the atmosphere of the Cevenne. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

We have stayed at the Chateau de Bussas a number of times and keep returning as it is a very beautiful and welcoming place with a wonderful atmosphere. The ancient chateau with its swimming pool, is set in a valley surrounded by wooded hills with many lovely walks and a river running through the estate. The apartments are all thoughtfully and comfortably furnished. A great place for families seeking an active holiday or for couples seeking to recuperate and relax. Local markets in nearby towns and villages mean there is always something interesting to do or places to visit.

Sonia, Crowhurst

We spent a week in this paradise, in one of the spacious, lovely flats that make up Bussas, lovingly and tastefully restored and maintained by a delightful couple of Londoners who have made this place simply perfect, and magical. We felt at home, and would gladly have stayed forever. The location is stunning, in the midst of Cévennes wilderness, within walking reach of fabulous hikes, some of which we took with our small children. They were as enchanted with it all as we were. We would happily return regularly.

We stayed here in Le Columbier for a week in September. It was perfect for the 2 of us. The website shows the beauty of the place but you really need to stay there to experience the magic that is Bussas. It is very secluded and peaceful, set in its own 200 acres. The apartment was well appointed with sitting areas outside. A comprehensive file of walks are thoughtfully provided to allow you to explore this stunning area of France. Spectacular views greet you at every turn. Wonderful!

We had a wonderful week, staying in the four a pain, perfect for two and with its private terrace we were able to catch the sun all day long whilst watching red squirrels gathering nuts in the trees just opposite. Chateau Bussas is completely charming and the hosts Liliane and Bernard are so welcoming and knowledgeable of the surrounding area. An ideal place to completely relax with plenty of walks and places to visit nearby. We were reluctant to leave but am sure we will be back for longer next time.

Amanda, Surbiton

This is a totally wonderful place. It is secluded in wonderful countryside with walks from the door over paths that have been walked for years into the hills. We were a large group (23) ranging from 89 years to 4 years and we all rated it our best holiday ever! We had the whole chateau and could all eat together either outside or indoors. It is well equipped for large numbers but also each apartment is totally self contained. Lovely pool crazy crazy golf and just a taste of heaven.

Well secluded from the access road, D907, the property encompasses 200 acres and dates from the 12th century, originally as a monastery. The stone walls exude a peace and harmony, perhaps instilled by the monks in their mortar. There is nothing pretentious, or even stately about the chateau, it is warm and welcoming to its guests as they arrive in the inner courtyard. Owners, Duncan and Meg Campbell, have over the years tastefully renovated each apartment including modern plumbing so each has its own particular charm and view. We enjoyed the wonderful food and wine and swapped stories.
