The
Experience

In a sweet, sleepy village, a skip from a river you can swim in, is this charming grey-shuttered house. It is owned by two down-to-earth designers in love with the Languedoc, excited to share their new home with guests. Inside: a delicious mix of old and new: tall windows, polished tommettes, a winding stone stair, deep mattresses, big rain showers. Upstairs are the bedrooms, warm, berugged and sprinkled with antiques, and a two-room family suite in the attic, flooded with light and blessed with a little sun terrace. After a sumptuous breakfast, cruise the Canal du Midi – Jon and Mel have their own boat.

Reviews

Me & my partner Steve stayed at Le Souqueto 3 times in 2014. 1 week in May, 2 in July and 1 in October. We had the most amazing time there. It's a beautiful building & very homely. We adore the place and the owners Jon & Mel. They can't do enough for you. I have food allergies & they provided me with a breakfast I could eat & it was no problem for them at all. They give you information of the area & places to visit. On my birthday we went on the Bella Mia for a trip along the Canal du Midi, food and wine provided. It was blissful!! We hope to return next year.

Wonderfully warm welcome - like being wrapped in labradors! Jon and Melanie could not have been friendlier or more informative. We had the family room, which was perfect for a three-generation group but did mean lots of bumped heads from the low beams. Lovely local exploring and a variety of restaurants within 15 minutes - a perfect stopover.

If only we had had longer to stay! On a flying visit, passing through, we missed out on all the good things that Mel & John at La Souqueto are able to steer their guests towards. It is abundantly clear that they have done a lot of research and love nothing more than sharing the place they love with their guests. As it was, we had time to appreciate their warm welcome and the ease and comfort of their charming house. Nothing was too much trouble and we left feeling we were leaving friends behind. Definitely a place to come back to.

We stayed a week with Jon and Mel who were wonderful hosts. Their enthusiasm and love of the area is infectious and their local knowledge ensures you make the most of your time visiting the best places, castles, beaches, gorges, villages along the Canal du Midi and restaurants ! The house is stylish and extremely comfortable. Lovely breakfasts in the cool kitchen planning the day with Jon and Mel, and evenings with wine on the roof terrace, watching the swallows as the sun goes down. Thank-you !

La Soqueto is a beautifully restored, classical and immaculate stylish French townhouse in a small, peaceful village wonderfully placed for access to all the delights the Languedoc has to offer. Jon and Mel are charismatic and amiable hosts whose sublime professional approach, personal warmth, irrepressible energy and enthusiasm make this a very special place. Care for their guests, who are quickly made to feel like friends, is simply impeccable while their extensive regional insights certainly enhance the Languedoc experience. When next in the region, we shall certainly return.

Local points of interest from Jonathan Alport

  • We are just half an our from The Med. Grussian plage is lovely but we tend to add another 10 minutes to the journey and head to La Frankie or Leucate for the beaches (stunning). On your way, drop into the beautiful villages of Bage and Periac de Mer.
  • We offer a unique service...we own a classic mahogany cruiser called Bella Mia that has been lovingly restored. Our mooring on the delightful Canal du Midi is just a few minutes walk away and we offer day/evening cruises and stay overs too for our guests!
  • We are smack, bang in the middle of thousands of acres of Vineyards! Make use of the 300+ days of sunshine in the Languedoc to explore the exciting Minervois wines...we can arrange tours or why not walk to our local vineyards Cabezac or L'Herbe Sainte?
  • The beautiful river Cesse passes behind La Souqueto B&B. Our guests can often be found reading a book on it's shingle beaches or swimming in it's crystal clear waters. Otters, Kingfishers and trout are often seen here too. (who needs a pool?)
  • If you like visiting ancient Cathar monuments and castles, this is the place for you! Carcassonne is 40 mins away but there are a whole host of incredible places like Minerve, Abbey Fontfroide, Queribus and Peyrepertuse Castles, the list is endless!
  • Guests staying with us for two weeks have simply scratched the surface of things to see and do! Walks in the Black Mountains, cycling along the Canal, horse riding, visiting Markets and best of all exploring some of the finest restaurants for €20 per head
