The
Experience

Napoleonic cannonballs were once fashioned in this striking country forge, in a secluded valley where flowers and bird-filled forests give way to waterfalls and trout-rich pools. Later, textiles emerged from its creamy walls… Now home to a charming Franco-American family, it’s a wonderful renovation project with four country-pretty bedrooms, new Italian showers and a kitchenette in the guest wing. Charles’ photos hint at their passion for the place, and you’ll learn more over a lazy brunch, a family supper or five-course dinner – organic with seasonal veg. Walk the dogs through a pocket of woods to book-happy Montolieu.

Reviews

We booked this lovely b&b for one night and ended up staying four! The rooms are large and well appointed, very comfortable bed, and fabulous bathroom. We had a view of a waterfall from the bathroom window! Charles and Laure are a super couple and make you very welcome. It was a little cool whilst we were there and they made sure the wood burner was on for us in the sitting room and were there to offer advice on where to go to make the best of our trip. Laure bought fresh croissants every morning for our breakfast and Charles made us a great meal one evening. Would strongly recommend a stay.

Laure and Charles are two of the most welcoming hosts that we encountered on our recent drive through Southwest France. In 4 short years they have transformed La Forge into a premier B & B with comfortable well appointed rooms and beautiful grounds. Upon request Charles will provide an evening meal from local, fresh ingredients with the herbs coming from his extensive garden close to the kitchen. While Charles served our meal, Laure ate with us and we all enjoyed conversation about personal experiences and their life at La Forge and the adjacent village of Montolieu, known as French book town.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Charles Cowen

  • The house is located at the foothills of La Montagne Noir (15 min. from Carcassonne) and is nestled just outside of the village of Montolieu - a village dedicated to books: boasting a museum, 15 bookshops, and various artists of all kinds.
  • The private domain boasts 2 gîtes, 4 chambres d'hôtes and two modern glamping facilities by a lake.
  • Whether searching good food, wine, fois-gras or truffles, the various wineries growing in reputation, starred restaurants and the Canal of the Midi (amongst others), one can but just but begin to taste all that the Occitane country has to offer...
  • Proximity to Castelnaudary (the birthplace of the cassoulet), Limoux (birthplace of the bubbles in wine), quick access to the wine regions of the Corbiers, Minervois, and Cabardes (among others) and caves & zoos make for a great family getaway.
  • The Revel (recognized nationally) accompanied by Carcassonne markets, antique dealers, museums, and plenty of shopping make for an easy outing no matter what weather one faces - cheap, considering Ryan Air prices for the weekend.
  • A region filled with monasteries and chapels and such as Fontfroide, etc..., or castles such as Lastours, etc - fun for the whole family...
