The Experience

This big 1789 farmhouse deep in the country has been in the Coulmier family for two generations. Luckily, one half of the main house has been given over to guests with spacious rooms to match a child-friendly garden.

After a big breakfast of croissants, fruits, cold cuts and cheeses, embark on Valérie’s village tour – a three-mile hiking path straight from the door taking in the surrounding countryside. After a day exploring there’s nothing better than the terrace for relaxing – Valérie can rustle up a traditional meal for you if you just want to kick back.

You’re in Champagne country here – the trail can be reached within 20 minutes of the house, so tick the big names off your list and meet small producers too. The town of Châlons-en-Champagne is a 20-minute drive with its museums, gardens, grand cathedral and churches. Take a cruise down the canal for an alternative view of the town.

Reviews

Great welcome, and extended hospitality, from Juliette. Very peaceful location. Excellent secure and shaded parking in the covered barn. Very comfortable room. Enjoyed the 'Champagne' meal after a reasonably long drive. Very good value all round. We'll be back!!

Lovely place, beautiful location, fabulous garden, welcoming host. Valerie was everything that you would want in a host. Would definitely recommend.

We had a very enjoyable stay here in this lovely home - a wonderful, peaceful, calm setting. The garden was absolutely beautiful. The property is well located as a stopping off point but is definitely worth visiting in its own right for more than just one night. Valerie was an excellent host and provided tasty, plentiful breakfasts and good evening meals.

We absolutely loved our stay here. We had the family suite which was really spacious and ideal for us and our teenage children. The food was lovely, both for dinner and breakfast and nothing was too much trouble for Valerie, who was the perfect host.

Clare, York

All Lovely here - the welcome, the setting, the room, the dinner, everything! Highly recommended.

Emyr, Berkhamsted

What a great place to stay this is. A lovely environment, peaceful and calm. Valerie is a wonderful host, producing good food and comfortable rooms. We will definitely be going again.

A beautiful home from home in the French countryside. The family suite was perfect for an overnight stay with my husband and two teenage sons. It comprised of two comfortable separate bedrooms decorated in a farmhouse style, a large family bathroom and views onto the garden and courtyard. Valerie was a warm and welcoming host and the food and aperitifs were enjoyed by all. We ate out on the terrace in the evening. We would certainly stay again and will recommend Valerie’s place to our friends and family.

Sally, Worcester

Very nicely restored farm with spacious rooms and in quiet nature environment. Also top marks for the warm reception by lovely hosts, and the breakfast. We would love to return

We were thrilled to have found Au Pre du Moulin and will certainly aim to return. It was very comfortable and very clean, excellent bedroom and bathroom ensured a good night’s sleep. Lovely home-cooked food in the evening and an excellent breakfast set us up for the day. Many thanks to our kind hosts.

Stephanie, Boston

We have visited dozens of French chambres d’hôtes in the last 20 years, but Au Pré du Moulin is simply the best of the best. Valérie, our hostess, welcomed us on arrival, showed us around the property, and introduced us to other guests. There is a large barn in which guests’ cars may be safely parked. The dinner was a wonderful example of home cooking, which was complemented with an excellent choice of wine.

Adrian, Leyland

Lovely house in the heart of the country. Excellent bedroom and bathroom; delightful host and superb food / especially the breakfast! Loved it!!

Martin, Oakham

We stayed at Au Pre de Moulin on our way to the South of France. It is a good 15 min drive off the motorway but ‘wow’ is it worth it! Madame prepared supper for our children first then us afterwards. All taken on the terrace with the beautiful garden on display. The photos of the exterior are old and do not do it justice, the new courtyard garden is beautiful. There are also swings, a trampoline and a huge garden to play in and explore. The food was delicious, the room spotless & large. Breakfast was delicious. I cannot find fault with this place. Madame was beyond helpful and welcoming.

We stayed here on our way to and from the Alps. A personal, warm welcome was followed by an invitation to relax and refresh ourselves after our journey. We felt really nurtured throughout. The bed was very comfortable too. Dinner was delicious and full of local and organic ingredients. Since becoming coeliac a year ago, I have been rather anxious about eating out. Some people say they understand about food being free of gluten, but don't; not so Valérie. She made buckwheat galettes for me instead of bread and when we returned on the way back, she had made a really delicious gluten free loaf.

Nicola, Frome

What a fantastic place! Amazing family room, which was enormous and very clean and cosy. Wonderful host who is so welcoming and an amazing cook using her own produce. Such a perfect spot for our stop off on the way to the Alps but wish we could have stayed longer, felt so relaxed after our stay. We will be back!

The renovation of the inner courtyard is about to be completed to a pretty stone pavement, with lawn and a beautiful raised wooden basin with water that springs and gives life to this courtyard. For me the strengths of this guest house are the exteriors, vast and beautiful. I can easily imagine having a drink on the terrace with Valérie's breakfast of high quality, authentic and organic produce. Even the value for money is just exceptional.

Pascale, Sawday's Inspector

This is the third time we have stayed with Valerie and Didier who are simply the best hosts possible. They are charming, imaginatively knowledgeable, and always at ease. Valerie provides a French country evening meal either a large, sumptuous multi course affair and what she calls a small, simpler meal which is anything but small or simple. Both choices are made with fresh ingredients in any season from her kitchen garden. Some ingredients are from local quality shops and are personally selected for guests. Didier selects the wine either or both champagne and his favorite robust reds.

Bonnie and Charles, Louisville

Such a delight to find this friendly and happy place. Lovely welcome, comfy bed and a homemade tart for supper. Nice to see bio products too. Only thing missing: soap bar - not keen on pump bottles for showering! Very gracious hospitality....

Hilary, Winchester

Easy 3 hour journey from the tunnel, good stopover for journeys further south, french country chic in the rooms, extremely quiet setting. Delightful host who, given the hot weather, offered a lighter meal at a reduced price, which we accepted, and it was very good. Quiche, salad, bread, delicious regional cheeses, desert made with local plums, and wine. Tea and coffee available anytime in the dining room.

Carol, Northwich Cheshire

Excellent overnight stay with a delicious table d'hôte. Our hosts were very welcoming and went out of their way to make us comfortable including toys for our little boy.

Kate, Doddington

We stayed with out two children in the family suite with adjoining rooms. We had a fantastic stay, with great rooms, friendly service, and lovely traditional food that the kids also enjoyed. Before dinner we sat in the beautiful garden with a cold beer while the kids played on the trampoline. We will definitely go back. We stayed in several nice chambres d'hotes during our holiday and this was the best.
