The Experience

The secluded old buildings house two owner families, a restaurant, several guest rooms and 15 tons of ever-present live fish. Fishing folk gather on Sundays to catch trout in the spring water that feeds the ponds; groups come for speciality lunches. Meals are served alongside your hosts and fellow guests around one big table, and may include trout terrine, home-reared salmon, a neighbour’s potatoes, wild asparagus in buttery sauce, cinnamon custard. For breakfast share brioche, baguettes, croissants, yogurt, fruit salad, cereals, apple juice and their own jams and honey. Created in an old mill 40 years ago, the bedrooms under the eaves are mostly small-windowed, simply furnished and prettily decorated in rustic or ‘grandmother’ style. Other rooms are in the newly built half-timbered cottage across the drive. At one end of the shop – packed with cottage-industry goodies (charcuterie, honey, jams, wine and champagne) – is a wide floor of thick glass under which immense fish can be seen swimming to and fro between the water tanks. A pony wanders freely in the grounds. Wonderful food and service – and good English spoken.

Reviews

Great hosts, lovely food and characterful accommodation in a tranquil location. What's more to want! Really enjoyed staying here for a one night stopover en-route to Lake Annecy. Would highly recommend.

High recommend the Domaine du Moulin d'Eguebaud. Lovely place, people and food.

Peter, Haworth

I know Sawdays does special, but this is extra - like going to stay with friends, and I only met them today! Beautiful tranquil location, not just polite and welcoming but good company - local everything - cress soup, salmon/trout etc for dinner all home made and home grown - I’ll definitely be revisiting if I can! Many thanks!

We stayed 2 nights at Le Moulin. A delightful family run set up with dining and some rooms in the very old mill building and other rooms in a newly built old style annexe - we stayed in the latter. Very comfortable room with a good bed, plenty of space and a reasonable size ensuite with shower over bath. A well equipped shared kitchen for tea/coffee making etc. Had an evening meal both nights, excellently cooked and served by Sandrine: full three course meal with fish from their trout farm with wine included. Also a shop on site to buy their products - a lovely stay. Would happily stay again.

A beautiful and restful place for us to break our journey from Italy. The setting was tranquil and verdant, with the sound of rushing water and lush watery meadows. The family couldn't have been more hospitable and we were regaled with an exquisite dinner consisting of many home made French delicacies and of course the freshest trout possible. We would like to come back and spend more time here as I think it's one of Sawday's best hidden treasures!

Barbara, Bristol

This was a lovely place to spend our first night on holiday. Such a surprise tucked away at the end of a lane. The room was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the wonderful warm welcome and great meal prepared for us.

Our last night in France this year couldn't have been bettered. Although the weather had broken and we arrived in the rain, the Domaine du Moulin d'Eguebaude couldn't have looked more beautiful. We stayed in the converted outhouse which have been decorated in a style that would make Monet and Matisse smile - the colours were magic. I would have gladly spent a full holiday just sitting in the room and reading. Our host, Alexandre, has been in the business for many years and is a most interesting and charming conversationalist and our meal, cooked by his talented daughter-in-law was excellent.

These charming, quixotic hosts rescued us at short notice to provide a welcoming overnight stay and homemade supper and breakfast. Their chambres d'hôte accommodation, set in their trout farm which is located in a tranquil country location but handy for motorway access, is family run with individual style and passion. Highly recommended!

Steve

A wonderful place to stay as a stop-over or for longer. We stayed for two nights , enjoying the company of other guests at our meal on first night, then, since we were the only guests on the second night, Alexandre and Chantelle joined us for a delightful meal. Food is excellent and in keeping with their general approach - simple cooking using local ingredients, so their own trout for an evening meal, and for sample, home-made jams at breakfast using very local produce. The rooms are fairly simple, but spacious and well equipped. All in all, a memorable stay.

Mike

We stopped for two nights and it was a great start to our holiday. The owners were very welcoming and the accommodation was clean and comfortable and the food was excellent. Loved the decking area where you could sit and chill with a glass of wine.

Malcolm

A lovely bed & breakfast in Champagne which doubles as a trout farm. Comfortable and ideally located if you are driving from Calais to the south of France, Switzerland or Italy. Sandrine cooked us a delicious dinner too. Highly recommended!

Rajiv

Wonderful experience from arrival to departure. Rooms were excellent and a separate lounge area with free tea, coffee, soft drinks , cakes and biscuits during stay. Champagne, wine and beer available in lounge fridge for reasonable charge. Outdoor seating as well. Dinner was extremely good with home grown smoked salmon and trout and lots of wine and wonderful cheese and dessert made all the more enjoyable by the company of the hosts. Beautiful peaceful setting and all your needs catered for. Highly recommend.

Chris

Great food, classic estate and professionally but warmly managed by a great family. Thoroughly Enjoyed our visit.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable overnight stay at this delightful B&B. After a 9 hour drive we arrived at this beautiful, tranquil domaine and were greeted by the very friendly owners. We were shown to a communal kitchen area for guests, where we were invited to help ourselves to local cider, soft drinks and cakes. Our room was large and very cosy. We'd booked dinner at the B&B which was a feast. An aperitif, plenty of good wine and a four-course meal prepared and served by the owner. As we had to leave very early next morning, a breakfast was kindly left for us. Great place & excellent value.

Teresa

A really nice place to stay. Very convenient to the Autoroute system. Evening meals are excellent in terms of value and quality. Lovely area of France to just meander around the countryside and visit the pretty little towns. Highly recommended.

charlie

Beautiful location and very friendly hosts. Sandrine was very accommodating in suggesting alternative to trout for the children - we all ate really well! Very relaxing setting after drive from Calais on way down to the Alps, highly recommended.

sally

Lovely stop over to Calais. Sandrine took the trouble to make sure my husband had gluten free food at the meal and breakfast. The meal was excellent.. The guest kitchen was great too. Will stay again, a great find

Jan

Tucked away at the end of a country road this stay felt very relaxing - no smal thing mid-way on the drive back to Calais. The room was comfortable and well appointed. We had dinner, which was excellent and excellent value too! Highly recommended!

Bethan

This is always a friendly place to stay. The accommodation is good and the evening meal, usually with all the guests assembled at one table, is a jolly and friendly occasion with excellent food served with an ample supply of wines. Sandrine is an excellent and thoughtful hostess and chef (with very good English if necessary). We often meet others, who like us, opt for an overnight here because it is an easy run to or from Calais and because the warm welcome is assured.

Howard

This is a truly special place to stay. Our second visit and we will definitely book for next year. Wonderful location, generous and charming hosts, splendid food. Also very useful facilities: small kitchen with kettle, fridge etc.
