The
Experience
A romantic, cosy and comforting little house on the edge of a honeysuckled village in the heart of Burgundy: one of the best. Adorable, white-shuttered, independent and with a secluded feel, the Gate House sits in a large walled garden with a gate that leads to a boat and a river. From the rose-filled garden you step into the hall, then the large and lovely kitchen and living area. Find rugs on huge flagstones, modern furniture, old country pieces, interesting art – and stacks of logs for the wood-burner, which in winter is lit for your arrival. On the same level are the bedrooms: duvets and linen on good quality beds, bright wicker furniture, boat prints on pale painted walls, garden flowers. No access to pool or park – unless you come with friends or family and let La Maison du Château too (you would have Delphine cooking for you as well then, wonderful!). You can ask about painting, wine, walking or bridge holidays – you must go on at least one wine tour while you are here, and sample some of the area’s finest burgundies and chablis; the House Book has lots of useful information. A simple, fresh place.

Location
It's hard to fault this place. The location is pretty perfect if you are looking for rural seclusion yet proximity to culture (eg Fontenay Abbey) and vineyards. The canal makes for perfect cycling in search of croissants for breakfast and there are walks, too, in every direction. We spent 2 blissful half days rowing/swimming in the river. The house is beautifully appointed if a little dark. Ideal for 4 adults or a family.
