Issy l'Evêque, Saône-et-Loire

Luxurious, secluded barn conversion overlooking the Burgundy countryside. Laze in a hammock, breakfast al fresco, sleep in a canopied bed…

1 bedroom

Sleeps 2

Deep in rural Burgundy, a beautifully restored barn with views of fields and hills. Built in the 1870s, the barn was transformed by its lovely Dutch owners Gré and Wim into the stylish bolthole you’ll find today. You’re in a blissfully peaceful spot here, approached down a winding country lane and surrounded by a couple of acres of mature gardens with mulberry trees and lavender. Inside, exposed-stone walls and old beams create rustic charm, while modern comforts including a Nespresso machine and a Bose iPod docking station make this a luxurious retreat. Paintings decorate the walls of the spacious sitting room and you can sink into comfortable sofas in front of the wood-burner. Step through French doors on to a covered terrace with a table for al fresco dining, a herb garden for cooking and a hammock to laze in. Light floods through floor-to-ceiling windows into the farmhouse-style kitchen. Climb a steep staircase to the romantic mezzanine bedroom and sleep in a canopied bed. Issy-l’Évêque is a short drive; Autun, Montceau and Charolles further afield.

We enjoyed a very peaceful week at Montrevier. The place is clean and well equipped with a lovely porch for sitting outside. The countryside is great for walking or cycling and there are nice walks and rides you can do direct from the house. It is a very tranquil spot; you'll hear birdsong and the cows in the field but little else. Our hosts Gre and Wim were very welcoming and there if we needed them - not that there was more we needed than a lovely place to stay in a beautiful place. A great week.

Recently returned from our second visit to Montevrier. We have been now in July and December so have seen it in 2 opposite seasons. The lovely woodburner is a delight in the Winter, and makes the barn really warm and cosy. The weather was particularly wild on occasion and the property is just perfect for curling up inside with a book and a glass of wine. Gre and Wim are wonderful hosts and nothing is too much trouble. I am sure we will visit again.

Montévrier looked wonderful on the Sawdays site, but is even better in person. Its setting in the peaceful countryside made for a perfect relaxing holiday, and was a great base for bike rides out through the surrounding area. The house itself is very spacious, well designed, and private. Everything was of good quality, from the coffee machine to the Tempur pillows. Gré and Wim were very good hosts- we enjoyed two delicious meals home cooked by them, and awoke on both Sundays to croissants waiting at the front door. Highly recommended.

Just back from a wonderful week at Montevrier. The property is beautiful, lovely and spacious for 2 people with 2 dogs. It is tranquil and quiet and has the most fabulous uninterrupted views of the surrounding French countryside. The garden is lovely and spacious, perfect for the dogs to run around in. Everything you need is here and Gre and Wim are lovely hosts. Super friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We thoroughly recommend Montrevier and can't wait to go back.

Montevrier is every bit as good as it looks. We had one of the most relaxing holidays that I can remember. Montevrier is is beautifully appointed, spacious and calm. The surrounding countryside and views are wonderful, and Gre and Wim are great hosts. They are friendly and helpful, but also discreet and Gre is an excellent cook! Highly recommended!

Peaceful and tranquil relaxation for myself, my wife and our little dog (Hamish). This is a luxurious and beautifully converted barn, in an idyllic corner of rural France. Gre and Wim are lovely hosts. Take some books, buy some wine, go for a couple of hikes, turn off your email and phone! Tip: Pay for an additional meal or two (especially after a long journey down) - the food is great! We ate one meal with Gre and Wim and enjoyed so much talking about their years living in and redeveloping Montevrier.

Local points of interest from Gré Swagerman

  • Smack in de middle of a number of wine regions, Montévrier is but a short drive from visiting the numerous winegrowers of the area. By car or bike, there are many routes taking you on a tour or spend a day in the wine capital of Beaune.
  • Cluny, Autun, Bibracte are but a few of the places you can indulge in local history with cathedrals, Roman art and architecture abound. Be it the Celts, the Gauls or the Romans, each have left their mark for you to explore.
  • Romancing the stone – a tour of châteaux introduces one to Burgundy’s remarkable heritage. Some more famous than others, each unique and well worth visiting not least for the most beautiful gardens and arboreta.
  • Famous for its wine, Burgundy also produces great food which can be enjoyed in a simple restaurant with a Menu de Jour or in a Michelin rated restaurant, the choice is yours! Even the supermarket (Bi1 in Luzy) sells locally produced food and wine.
  • Peace and quiet ! Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, drive or cycle along the winding country roads and sleepy villages. Take a picnic, open a bottle of wine and just listen to birdsong and ENJOY.
