Laniscat, Côtes-d’Armor

Simple and stylish, a doll's house-like Brittany cottage, decorated with the friendly owners' paintings and carpentry. Purely enchanting

1 bedroom

Sleeps 2

Like a doll’s house: a one-up, one-down cottage in a tiny village lane, this is an entrancing place that doesn’t feel in the least cramped; every inch of space has been used to simple, stylish effect. Ceramic tiles cover the open-plan ground floor, a Moroccan rug, bright armchair and sofa add colour; diminutive windows are hung with cream cotton tatting done by Julie’s great aunt; a tiny, perfect kitchen is tucked under the steep stairs. Bedroom and bathroom are up under the rafters where Julie’s paintings decorate the walls and the low bed, flanked by niche lights, is covered with gingham: curl up here with a book or a DVD. Admire Jez’s expert carpentry on the bath panelling (but don’t expect to lie full stretch in the bath: it’s three-quarter size). You’ll like Julie and Jez. They are helpful, laid back, former teachers and live five minutes away. If you want to avoid going in search of restaurants in nearby Gouarec, book an excellent vegetarian meal with them. A terrific place for a couple – though not if you’re at all creaky. Listen to the church bells and enjoy the lavender in the garden.

A quaint, beautifully restored cottage in unspoilt Brittany. Owners Julie and Jez were incredibly friendly and helpful, providing us with plenty of suggestions and even some bikes! Boasting a tasteful and clean interior, the cottage is home to Jez’s handmade furniture and Julie’s paintings. Wonderful walks, cycles and drives within a short distance. We'd recommend a stroll along Lake Guerlédan at dusk after a meal at Auberge de Guerlédan. An ideal oasis for our honeymoon, we will return to Kerpoence and Toul Bleïz soon and we'll be sure to book one of Jez’s vegetarian meals! Can't wait.

Sam, Guildford

A beautiful gite, Jez and Julie have put a lot of thought into the layout and the very high standard of finishing touches. Perfect for couples who are looking for a peaceful break. The location is ideal for exploring both the North and South Brittany coasts by car and also plenty of opportunities for cycling along canal paths, cycle tracks and quiet roads. Jez and Julie provided plenty of ideas for trips and on arrival we were treated to all the essential groceries that we needed including a very welcome bottle of the local cider! We hope to return at some time in the future.

Antony, Clevedon

Thoughtfully converted and equipped, this cute one-up-one-down cottage never feels small or cramped. It's a real home-from-home in a quiet setting with parking, patios and a great bakery nearby. It's a convenient base for exploring Brittany, whether it be the glorious local walks, lake, towns, villages, historical sites, wildlife, brocantes, etc or the more distant coasts and cities such as Quimper. A HUGE bonus is the possibility of delicious, mouthwatering meals in Julie and Jez's beautiful stone summer house about 5 mins drive away at Toul Bleiz. J&J are fabulously warm, friendly, generous and fun hosts.

Local points of interest from Julie & Jez Rooke

  • It is SO rare to find a detached cottage made JUST for two...Kerpoence sits on a 'no through' little lane, across the road from the beautiful gardens of the village Mairie. A short stroll takes you to the bakers and here you can buy fresh croissants .
  • Enjoy Rambling and cycling through beautiful scenery, along the canals , around Lake Guerledan and over rugged moorland. There are now wonderful cycle routes by the side of the Nantes- Brest canal and along the old railway tracks. We have bikes to borrow.
  • Just a ten minute car ride away ( or an enjoyable bike ride) are watersports and a beach at nearby Lake Guerledan. The lake is beautiful and now has a path which takes you all the way around it.
  • Each year, at Bon Repos Abbey, there is a spectacular 'Son et lumiere' . The Abbey is situated on the Nantes-Brest canal and is an idyllic place for a picnic or there are little café bars...perfect for watching the world go by.
  • Brittany has many lovely, bustling markets to browse, all selling local produce, from cider to cheeses and local crafts. Brittany also has many music festivals, the most well known being ´Les Vielles Charrues' at Carhaix.
  • Central Brittany is a magical place, unspoilt and a wonderful place to relax ' far from the madding crowd'. We have stood on the Liscuis moorland (just a 30 minute walk from the cottage) and watched the stars appearing in a sky free of light pollution.Wow.
