The
Experience

Montpeyroux is a beautifully revived medieval hilltop village and the Pittmans’ house, full of quirks, brocante and family warmth, has a bowl-over view. Sun floods the taupe-cosy bedroom; your sitting room lies cool and restful in the vaulted former wine store. Helen happily shares her knowledge of her adopted region with you over breakfast here or on the terrace; Kevin works in town and is here in the evenings. Charming and relaxed, they love life here. You have a little terrace and private entrance. The village has excellent eateries, from crêpes to creative gourmet. Do stay, there’s masses to see and do.

Reviews

Some destinations exceed your expectations. Chez Helen is one of these. We stayed 5 nights in this wonderful place, could have stayed 5 more! The location, the village, the breakfasts, the private terrace, the hosts, the bedroom the bed, the sitting room, the decor, the breakfast (so good has to be mentioned twice) all wonderful. Do not miss this place.

Chez Helen was as beautiful as the view from the terrace. We were made to feel very much at home. Helen was the perfect host very helpful telling us the best places to visit but not over powering if you wanted to know something she was there otherwise we were left alone. As for the accomodation you had your own private entrance and terrace the bedroom and 'cave' sitting room were beautifully decorated and wonderfully comfortable. It's a fantastic B&B in a truly beautiful part of France the view from the terrace is to die for it's a little patch of heaven.

We had a lovely short stay here with friendly and welcoming hosts in a beautiful house. The village is full of character and we spent a nice day driving around the lovely countryside and visiting the top of the puy de dome by train.

What a gem. We were blown away by the house, the location and, in particular, by the friendliness of the owners. They could not have made us feel more at home. Breakfast on the balcony every morning was delicious, and we also had access to a fridge if we wanted to have something light in the evening. Helen and Kevin could not have done more to make our stay memorable; advising on excursions and places to visit, booking restaurants, and just making us feel very welcome. We cannot recommend Chez Helen enough, you will not be disappointed.

Eric, London

We stopped off at Chez Helen to break up our journey and wish we could have stayed longer; one night wasn't enough. The village is fascinating and the house is wonderful. We had a delicious breakfast on the terrace with a view over the countryside and were made most welcome by the owners. We will be recommending Chez Helen to family and friends when we get home. Desmond, Southport

Helen was the most delightful hostess and our every need was catered for. The room is delightful, the sitting room and sole use of a terrace being a bonus. Breakfast was delicious and beautifully served on the upper terrace with stunning views. So convenient for Clermont Ferrand and for exploring the Auvergne.. A French jewel of an area and worth a repeat visit.

Catherine, Cape town and sarragachies, gers

As the Michelin guide would say, Chez Helen is well worth the journey. Not only do guests get their own sitting room but also their own terrace with a most stunning view while the hospitality is simply exemplary.

Francis, Royal wootton bassett

A truly beautiful and comfortable house in Montpeyroux just south of Clermont -Ferrand with fabulous views. Great breakfast with home made jams. Lovely en-suite room with own terrace and lounge where breakfast is served. Hosts Helen and Kevin made us most welcome and we would certainly stay there again when in the area. Good selection of restaurants nearby.

Gill, Weybridge

This property is a little gem, full of character, nestled in a beautiful French village. It is a perfect stop off, for visiting regions further south. We used it as a base to explore the local area. We received a warm welcome from English/French speaking Helen & Kevin into their beautiful home. As guests, we enjoyed the luxury of a suite, (unusual in a B&B) this is very well decorated and gave us some independence to read and relax in comfort. Every need is catered for by Helen and the breakfast was delicious. Thanks Helen & Kevin for your hospitality. I feel we will return

Local points of interest from Helen Pittman

  • The ancient fortified village of Montpeyroux is classified one of the " Plus Beaux Villages de France",full of historic charm and character it was known first for the limestone quarried here in the Middle Ages and later as a wine producing village
  • The medieval tower dominates the heart of the village. Once owned by the Medici family it now offers a vantage point over the surrounding countryside with views of the volcanic mountains of the Auvergne and the valley of the Allier bellow.
  • Stroll around the labyrinth of alleyways taking in vaulted passageways, the 14th century gatehouse and glimpses of the old ramparts.
  • Discover the local area on well marked footpaths or venture up to the Sancy Mountains for more adventurous hiking and skiing. Other outdoor activities include horse riding, canoeing and mountain biking.
  • There are many sites of cultural interest in the area including outstanding Romanesque churches, chateaux and ruined castles, and the City of Clermont Ferrand with its unusual black volcanic stone cathedral.
  • Take a trip by rack and pinion railway up the Puy de Dome -on a clear day you can see Mont Blanc-and marvel at the stunning volcanic area stretching out below. Nearby Issoire's Saturday morning market is a must!
