The
Experience

At the head of a long shapely valley stands this 18th-century château guarded by an atmospheric 11th-century keep where bedrooms are steeply, sensationally ‘gothic’ or French château in style. In the big inglenook dining hall, eco-committed Sophie – she’s a carriage driver too – serves home-smoked ham, her own organic veg and fruit. Michel’s passions are heritage conservation and blazing trails across the hills straight from the door. They are bilingual hosts who may invite you to join in bread-making, cooking, wide-ranging conversation and visiting their medieval garden… Stunning views, absolute peace, an inimitable welcome.

Reviews

Many thanks to Monsieur and Madame Couillaud for a fantastic break in the Cantal this summer August 2017! This was a great holiday and best for us included: - - the terrific hospitality and the atmosphere of staying in a beautiful chateau - all the advice that our hosts gave us: - for churches and waterfalls to visit, for walks in the Cantal hills, and for unique places to eat out in the evening. Sophie and Michel made us so welcome in their delightful home. The chateau is exceptional - we stayed in the tower bedroom which is a wonderful experience. Our breakfast was a feast of homemade and home grown products. All highly recommended and added up to one of our best Sawdays stays.

Although the weather was not superb, we had a great time during our stay in Chateau de Lescure (schuur). Michel and Sophia were very interresting and open-minded hosts. Conversation with them matters. The food is tasteful and fair.

As a New Zealander craving history and character this experience was sensational. Sophie and Michel were the MOST wonderful hosts. I did not want to leave. There was such peace here in this wonderful rural valley. Excellent thank you.

Local points of interest from Michel Couillaud & Phoebe Sophie Verhulst

  • We offer drives in a horse-drawn carriage to see the countryside. The horses are the ‘Cheval Auvergne’, a rare breed.
  • We can organise visits of our medieval garden in the summer. We have redeveloped the original and link the plants to their history. There is a flower garden for decoration and another for medicinal and aromatic plants.
