You are well looked after here. Cheerful new owners Pascale and Martial have devoted their careers to hospitality and are well-travelled. They’ve kept the enchanting feel of a simple little hotel (intimate, friendly) and redecorated the bedrooms (not vast but very attractive). Find pale beige and blue fabrics with flashes of red-striped Basque, maritime or bull-fighting themed artwork, lovely views over to green hills and crisp bathrooms with shining tiles. Unbend on a comfy sofa in the sitting room – it’s cosy in here and there’s lots of work by local artists; on balmy days discover plenty of boltholes in the garden, on the terrace or by the super swimming pool. All is relaxed and you can make yourself at home. Breakfasts are generous affairs with homemade jams and cakes, delicious local farm produce (cheese, ham, saucisson). You are on a quiet road outside the village of Arbonne with a few discreetly screened neighbours, it’s a ten-minute hop to the best surfing coast in Europe and the heady charm of Biarritz, or the antiques fair at Ahetze, or a championship golf course – and the mountains are worth a week’s effort in themselves.
